i use psi, it integrates with msn yahoo and aim and icq. it changes the icone in the bottom right systray from yellow to red, and you just double click that and pops open the message box which is just their box and then you click reply to right to it, hit the esc key if you wanna do away with it, and its small boxes to so if you really do wanna hide it from the boss its no problem, it just stays an icon in the tray on the right though. its pretty nice. http://psi.affinix.com/

GAIM, aside from supporting encrypted IM traffic, also has features similar to this. Builtin plugins allow for your messenger icon in your systray to blink, but no messages popup until you select it. This prevents you from being spammed. If you combine this with the plugin that keeps a chat history, this should more than be adequate based on what you have said so far.
GAIM supports, among other things, AIM, Trillian, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and Jabber.

There is only one constant, one universal, it is the only real truth: causality. Action. Reaction. Cause and effect...There is no escape from it, we are forever slaves to it. Our only hope, our only peace is to understand it, to understand the 'why'. 'Why' is what separates us from them, you from me. 'Why' is the only real social power, without it you are powerless.

do you think you will become paranoid to look for the people whos watching over you while you do it?
even though people beside you won't notice it, there are those system administrator that will say "I got ya! I know what you're doing, man.."

Ok neat little feature in AIM, if you have it running and you put up an away message then in the box where you see your away message there is an option called "disable pop-up notifications while I'm away". If you check this and check the disable sounds buttons, you wont get any popup windows and you wont see the bloody blinking in the taskbar either.
