    Post a 150-year-old riddle[Riemann hypothesis]

Eyeing a million-dollar prize, a mathematician claims to have made progress in solving a 150-year-old riddle. The solution to the problem could render secure payments and other sensitive Internet transactions vulnerable.

A Purdue University professor has begun to publish what he claims is a proof of the Riemann hypothesis. The hypothesis, which dates from 1859, attempts to show that there in fact are connections in apparently random sets of prime numbers, which are heavily used in developing cryptographic code.

He has been slammed a little though and most folks are skeptical. Although he did solve the Bierebach problem (spealt comnpletely wrong) so may be on to something. His proof is a real fun read........

So the link posted at the top leads to the guy's personal website, where one finds

"Apology for proof of the Reimann Hypothesis" - link to a pdf file which I couldn't get to download. If anyone's successful, pm me please? I'd like to read this.

I read this about 3 months ago @ Slashdot ( http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/06/09/223241 ) I don't think it has moved at all since then. But I'm supprised this website posted it as current news. :s

I don't know much of the background to this proof/hypothesis, but I think it recieved a bit of sensational media attention on this website. Not everything is based on public-key cryptography, it is mainly reserved for key-distribution. Take RSA for example -- key distribution. It encrypts a randomly generated private symetric key to decrypt the file. But with how important key distribution is to make sure two parties can decrypt it without someone in the middle also able to decrypt it...it would be an issue to think about...and so far at least 3 months have past...

Well, trying to connect to f1.soul-gate.net probably wont work for you the next little while. Right after posting the link, my server suspiciously dropped offline.

Not sure of the cause yet although im inclined to believe ddos.

    Cheers

I read these mags, and I got the original article, so I posted, as it is of interest to the crypto's here. But to be honest, my math level is struggling with quadratic equations, and th emore I learn, the more I find I need to learn ............

Must read up on Catch 22.
