The VMware is a good idea. I did some testing with VMWare on Linux running Windows XP contained in Linux. The nice thing about the VMWare is that you can put the Windows XP into a NAT'd sub net and use Linux to sniff and monitor everything.
To use it I recommend having at least a gig of ram on the host linux machine since XP runs like crap with anything less that 512 megs.
