Sorry kid, I guess I knew that about 15 years ago when "vitriol" and yourself were still in diapers
It can have its uses to prevent things running at boot up though.

This is actually the basis behind the recent ballyhoo with WinXp SP2 and the drag'n'drop a .gif into a cmd window and it will run because all it is is a renamed exe.
It works because all the rest of windows looks at the file extension to determine what to do when the file is double clicked except the command prompt. It looks at the actual header of the file to determine if it is executable.... If it is it executes it regardless of the file extension.

Well you learn something new every day.
I guess the credit shouldn't go to "vitriol", though i still find the .bat trick interesting.
Sorry for posting it in the wrong forum, i'm still a newbie to these here parts.... Too many god darn forum sections is my excuse.
