As far as Webmail goes... I agree that your own
server for sending e-mail is great, but unless you
have the ability to send mail direct via port 25
you will be just spining wheels... or if you own
your own mail server(s) like me and your ISP
is a nice guy....
Just remember e-mail is not sent encripted
under normal means... The next best
way I see if there is a server to server and
user to server encription that is invisible
to the normal user.....

Er.... That's what a mailserver does.... Sends SMTP traffic to port 25 on the destination server.

Actually, unless your netblock is on the RBL then you can use your own computer to send mail directly to many target mail servers anywhere.... Just tell it that the SMTP server for your client is the MX server for the outbound connection. Your client does nothing different than your ISP's mail server when it makes the transaction.

So you can cut out the "middle man"

Get a better ISP.... Mine allows inbound and outbound.... However, it's netblock is RBLed by many of the bigger ISP's..... So I bounce outbound off work... Which I still control...

Not sure if it's a matter of better or worse ISP wise. I don't mind that they block outgoing port 25 connections although I'm not sure I see any proof that it's helping the spam problem much.
I have no need for outbound port 25 connections.
But if I did, I would not use an ISP which blocked those connections.

Interesting you brought up RBL's as getting their IP blocks listed was a main motivator
for the port 25 blocking for many a ISP.

I too have had to bounce mail off another after having to use IPs previously listed.

SS2: Comcast's netblock is RBLed... AOL use the RBL, Roadrunner uses it too.... From home I don't deal with many people on either ISP but 90% of my sweeties family is on one or the other... Thus she can't communicate with them if we go outbound from my mailserver.... Thus I get "earache".... Thus I bounce off my work netblock....

If you want to maximize your privacy, you should consider running your own mail server.

Remember that even tho you may read your webmail via https, its still sent and delivered in
clear text in most cases.
Your email has probably been viewed by many more people than you think.

Running your own server can help minimize the eyes on your mail.
There are many free mail servers and costs would be minimal.

Is messenger integration an absolute requirement?

What about yahoo/yahoo messenger since you say you hate Microsoft..??

I donot agree with you, well providing your own webmail solutions might not provide you with enough security.

You can protect your server with cisco 510e firewall or others and managing it is pretty difficult.

If you have enough money to provide

1. dedicated server or colocated server

2. a powerfull firewall

3. antivirus solutions

4. an webmail program.

Kinda difficult, I say u use either Excite or yahoo Mail which is far secure than others today,
