    Stp

    I have done numerous searches and have found little if any help. I was capturing packets with etherreal on my suse/i686 box. I have a cable modem connected to a Linksys WRT54g with the sveasoft firmware upgrade. I have noticed there are numerous STP packets spewing forth from the router every couple of seconds all of which appear to be identical. Just a couple of questions - 1: Is this normal 2: Is this necessary if no other routers or switches are part of the LAN

    This should explain things.

    First link on a google search... Course I looked up spanning tree protocol....

    EDIT: In case this gives you the same migraine it gave me... Simple answer.. It is not "necessary" for any network, and somewhat useless on the one you described.

    It is not "necessary" for any network, {...}
    STP is very necessary if you have a redundent network. It will prevent "loops"; ie packets arriving twice (or more) at the destination.

    But for a homenetwork STP isn't needed.
