why do the leaders of the U.S. and other countries around the world believe it necessary to hold debates? Our forefathers, etc.. ? The debates aren't simply to "Swing voters" they are an attempt to let the people in america know what each candidate supports personally.

Because the ba5tard5 will do ANYTHING to get on the telly.

Who was the first President / opponent to go tete a tete ?
When was it ?

At a guess, I'd go for Tricky Dicky, makes it early 70's.
And I'd pitch the responsibility at ABC / NBC / CBS et al. Just to drum up audiences.........
