    SATA Problems

Hopefully someone can help me out. We have a customer that has a Soyo SY-KT600 Dragon Ultra Platinum motherboard. He uses 2 Western Digital 120 GB Serial ATA drives in a RAID 1 configuration (mirrioring). They are hooked to the onboard SATA controller which is a Silicon Image Sil3112ACT144 (chipset). We do a fresh install of Windows 2000 Pro and load the drivers from floppy during the setup just like you're supposed to. I can load Windows 2000 just fine and install all the drivers and Windows updates just fine. I can install any software I need to as well with no problems. The system will reboot and start up and shut down just fine. Eventually however, the system will boot up and give him a blue screen saying something along the lines of the Windows registry cannot load a hive file, or when it gets to the main Windows 2000 boot screen it says that it is missing files. Bad part of the whole thing is that it affects both the drives due to the RAID 1 configuration. And yes, I have updated the BIOS to the most current version and used the most recent drivers to install the controller. And all of the device drivers are the most current revision as well. Anyone have a similar problem with Windows 2000 and SATA drives or with that controller specifically? Any help would be appreciated.

    Eversor,

I don't have an answer for you, not haveing encountered any problems with SATA RAid installations..

My question : You stated "Eventually however" how long approximatly is eventualy? an hour a day a week?.

OK : You have updated the drivers and the BIOS..

hang on.. you have the OS running on the Raid array, is that right? I thought that a regular setup had the OS on its own HDD and the DATA was on the RAid.. or am I wrong..

    Undies,

This is RAID1 which is straight mirroring as I recall, I think what you are describing is RAID5?

Eventually = 1 to 2 days. And yes it is a RAID 1 config. 2 hard drives the secondary being the mirror in the event that the primary drive physically fails. I'm not trying to be an ass but check out this link for RAID info:

And since I've posted my question no problems have arisen yet (yet being the key word).

Well I have never had a problem with RAID1, but I haven't used SATA drives.

It strikes me as rather strange that the machine runs for 1-2 days.

Is it left permanently powered up? I am starting to think that there could be something like a HDD or overheating problem, a memory leak/program conflict.

What are the exact error messages you are getting?

    Cheers

Eversor, I came across a similar problem with a RAID 1+0 so doing mirroring and data striping over 4 disks resulting in a vey fast and constantly backed up box against failure. Now this box sometimes blue screened. The cause was, that sometimes the windows close down went wrong. Probably cause the disks had not time to write their buffer empty?
