    convert ipod to external hd

anybody know if this is possible or if it's been done before? i was thinking it might be worthwhile if i could get an ipod cheap from like freeipods.com or something and turn it into an external hard drive for storage, plus it's innocuous: nobody would suspect you were storing anything on it except mp3 files. it would be like, you know when you get a real thick book and cut the middle of all the pages out and then glue the pages together and hide stuff in it on a bookshelf

iPod as a hard drive article. It's been done before. It's part of why the British Gov't banned iPods from being used (easy data transfer). Some iPods can be used for booting a Mac, IIRC. I've used it to transfer photos but no reason why you couldn't use it for other things.

There is a hack out there for some iPods: apparently they come with a microdrive. There's a way to remove it and then use it in a digital camera that supports microdrives. Haven't done it yet since I don't have a camera like that... but hey! anything is possible.

thanx, i searched things like ipod+hard drive on google for a long time and didnt find much. i should probably try something like ipod+hacks. i dont own an ipod, but im thinking about getting 1 now. would you have to format the drive if you wanted to use move files between the ipod and a windows comp because the ipod hd would be in the mac format. i remember runing pearpc a while back and i had to use a program called macdrive to view the mac hd image and transfer files between it.

The iPod can be formatted in HFS (Mac OS) or FAT. Mine's Fat because I use iTunes on Windows. You can download the iTunes now to play with and get comfortable with. There are a few sites that even show how to use it with Linux if you want.

On that second part of what you said I can clarify. What had happened is that there were some sort of drives in an MP3 player (I can't recall if it was I-Pod, I think it might of been one of it's competitors) that could also be bought retail for digital camera's. Thing was, the drives bought retail sold for like 600 bucks, so people who were techno smart would buy like 10 MP3 players, take the drives out, and sell them on ebay etc for like 400-500 making a nice big profit.
