What file format?
If it FAT32.. Convert it to NTFS..
Most of the XP SP2 problems that I have encountered have been with systems on the FAT32 file format... especially those that refer to file corruption problems
Is the SP2 install complete? I suspect it isn't

Admin toools will give you or the defrag tool will give you the info that you need.. easiest is defrag.. look at the drive list.. it will say ntfs or FAT32..
IF and only IF the drive is formated in FAT32.. open the commant prompt and use the "Convert" command.. (open help and type in CONVERT the full syntax is listed there..
should ber something like
convert c: /fs:ntfs
but I could be wrong

Using google, I found this bit of text:
(...) ends up the $MFT is the NTFS file structure table, and it got massively jacked up and so the entire partiton went poof, (...)
As far as I know, there's some recovery software on the Windows XP installation-disc. Maybe that can help you fix this - I'm not entirely sure though.

And your image is of ?
If your image is PRE SP2, then fine.
If however, your image was taken after the failed SP2 install, then I would hold up on the image route.
Can you get hold of the SP2 CD [free from MS]
