Screen blank during startup when external HDD is plugged in

Whenever I plugged in an external HDD and start or reboot my computer, the screen become blank during startup and never load the OS. How may I get around with this problem without having to disconnect the external HDD?

As a guess, since I don't know how you are connecting it, or how your BIOS is set.

It sounds like your box is attempting to boot from the external hd. Change your BIOS to take that out of the options and it should work fine.

How's the external HDD connected? If you reverse the IDE flatcable (wrong way around) you'll get the same effect.

How's this drive powered? Maybe your PSU isn't up to it.
