    Hi,

At the risk of sounding incredibly stupid (the truth has a nasty habit of getting out )

    What OSes are we talking?

    NT4.0 (SP3 or later)
NT 5.0 (Win 2K) Pro Client
    NT5.0 (Win2K) Server Home
    XP Home
    XP Pro

    etc

By "log out" do you mean shut down, or change user?

OK, so I cancel the shutdown, what happens then? does it elevate privileges or something.

it doesn't elevate privilages, it closes the cyber nanny (or any other "nanny" program you can think of) because you trick the computer into getting ready to log off and then not...

the only types of ptograms that this trick will not kill are the ones that run as services rather than just hidden

i used this trick back in highschool (back when windows 95 was da bomb and it still works through XP (so that should anwser your OS question)
    [gloworange]find / -name \"*your_base*\" -exec chown us:us {} \\;[/gloworange] [glowpurple]Trust No One[/glowpurple][shadow] Use Hardened Gentoo [/shadow]

I know it works if you leave outlook open -- EX:

in windows xpi have outlook set to automatically empty trash on closing -- when windows tries to shutdown, it tries to close outlook. outlook puts up a prompt and windows tries to force close the application -- if you ignore that, then you are fine and can work in a minimal program running envoronment

also, you can do the same thing with a word document by making a new one and typing some stuff then when it prompts to save, just ignore it -- i used that trick when trying to combat sasser (when it was just a proof of concept and i was working with windows 2k)
    [gloworange]find / -name \"*your_base*\" -exec chown us:us {} \\;[/gloworange] [glowpurple]Trust No One[/glowpurple][shadow] Use Hardened Gentoo [/shadow]

You were combating SASSER when IT was proof of concept? this sounds like a good story ..
The Admin Services initiated shutdown is a Force Shutdown.. that is If the work ain't saved it is toast..

And You were Combating THE SASSER Worm when it was proof of concept? WOW

As for the Empty Deleted Emails option with Outlook If you initiate a normal shutdown.. how the hell can you do anything.. the machines I tested here while they stoped shutting down at the Outlook "are you sure" message..., ya can't open shite at this point.. haven't tried Outlook Express

my god you were combating SASSER when it was proof of concept..

ok, i admit, i worded that wrong -- i should have said, when we were combating the proof of concept that came out the week or 2 before sasser came out (here at work we refer to it as the sasser Proof of Concept)

    oops...

    OK,

Can anyone give me a link to stuff this is supposed to shut off?..........like 30 day trial or whatever?

I tried it on XP Pro, and it seemed to work, except it did not close any processes.

I was also interested if it might have an anti-malware role; as I suspect that djscribble was hinting at?

    As for the original post:

"Son, when I went to school we had slate boards and slate pencils"

    Anyone else here remember them?

and the teacher would pick up a slate from the kid behind you and whack you over the head?.. nope.. never heard of them.. but they didn't have good porn filtering.. and the popups were killers

    ..

Hmm I see what your getting regarding the processes.. .. and dealing with malware.. may have aplay later..
Give a different prog a go.. I will be testing OLEXP later, see how it compares to Outlook.. also try progs with different Priority levels..
