faxas.exe
This morning I have gotten several VMs about a process that is eating 100% CPU cycles. It's called faxas.exe. Thus far, I do not have a sample in my hands for examination. Has anyone else seen this yet? This one caught me off guard. I haven't heard of it.
Thanks!

There are a couple 'new' variants of some old friends making the rounds. VirtuMonde has a variant that is difficult to remove, and uses a random .exe with a BHO and has lines like this:
O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {02F96FB7-8AF6-439B-B7BA-2F952F9E4800} - C:\DOCUME~1\BRYANT~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\pctsab.dat
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*bastcp] C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\bastcp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*bastcp] C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\bastcp.exe rerun
There is also a SwapX variety that has entries like this:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Control handler] C:\WINDOWS\System32\rlnj3496bsthd.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: 86r2g649rclhkoll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll.dll
What you are describing is like the first one, but you may want to keep heads up for the second one.
There is also one more "mass infection" that you can read about here:

Cheers!
EDIT: Of course, these are just wild stabs at what you may be looking at, but to be forewarned and all that jazz.

Hi Horse, I found reference on another forum which suggest it's a Virus.
OK i got the AGW anti virus. Found 13 viruses, thought i'd got it sorted. Turns out i restart and its just as bad as ever. DB.exe and now regexp.exe are coming up both with 1.2GB page file usage and identical memory use (clone maybe). Since i installed AGW a new one called faxas.exe has been coming up. I'm going to update my Norton subscription - its an out of date 2002 version. I think u can do this online. Should i get a better firewall? At the moment i have the windows one + one built into BT Yahoo i believe. Nothing special. Probably how the worms and Trojans got in in the first place. My computer is rapidly dieing, urgent help needed.
I checked with Symantec, McAfee & TrendMicro and couldn't find any other info, sorry.
