What is exploit???
Hi all!
As you can see I'm Bulgarian and my English is not very good so I was wondering what the hell is exploit???
I see it is related with security, but in the dictionary i coudn't find the translation related with PC language.
I was wondering can someone explain me that?
I would be very thankfull to him !

Two related terms:
Vulnerability: a flaw or bug in an operating system, application or hardware. It can cause the system or part of a system to operate in a manner than what was intended.
Exploit: an action or a program or piece of code that takes advantage of a vulnerability.
Does that help clarify?

In a manner than what was intended?????
That i don't understand.
Do you mean in a manner that was not intended.
I don't beleive that Microsoft will make a program and will like to have a bug in it. As it is happening with IE. They have bug in the program(exploit),(wrong programming code?)
Am I right?

No one intends for a bug to occur but remember that humans are the ones that program. They may not think that people will put.. say... text into a box that should have numbers. So they don't do any validation (or checking) to see that the data put in is the correct type. If it's not checked, then the program may process the text to do an action. That isn't the intended direction for the program.
Does that help?

yeah...

This is not a good example...
If it's not checked, then the program may process the text to do an action.
No it wouldn't...
But if you have some funny sequence number calculations using integer variable types you could run into an integer overflow which in alot of cases would lead to heap overflow. Or if you have a text-box that only allows about 10 characters to be placed, you could exploit what is probably a stack-overflow condition.

For most computer-related terms you can use http://www.whatis.com/
This is a link to the first result for 'exploit'
