    Data Cable Type of Thing

    What is the cable called where I can connect to computers together and send data to each without a network connection?

    A "null modem cable"..............it connects the 9-pin sockets (typically), and runs at 2600 Baud

    Yes ,that's the animal!

    I have several of them, the connectivity is slow, but reliable.............

    I guess most engineers have one "in their box" just in case.....

    depends - if you're running winXP I can walk you through it -

    hook the nullmodem cable into the nic on both computers.

    Do the following on both machines
    start>control panel>network connections
    create a new network connection - follow the steps to feed the monkey - make sure you set the network 'name' to the same thing.

    Each setup will require that computer to reboot - after reboot, the connection will come up and you'll be networked.

    Your firewall, and some of your services might need tweaking to allow good data flow between the two computers. For further assistance I refer you to the windows helpfiles on 'sharing' and on 'network connections'.

    Thanks alot but I'm not using a Cat5 cable, this is a "null cable" it's a serial type of cable.

    They are getting harder to find as well. The only place to find them is in the "dollar" bin or online in my area. No one stocks them anymore, yeah like USB is all that.
