    Question Custom Computer help

I am thinking about getting a new computer, but I haven't looked around for five years(!). So, I have a "rough outline" but if something doesn't look right, please tell me!

    3.6 GigaHertz processor
    250 GB Hard Drive
    DVD RW
    100 GB Ram

And I was thinking about getting a server, but I have no clue what I should look for...but specifically something along the lines of several gigs bandwidth and at least half a gig of space. Could I have an external server?

But as for the specs of my "ideal computer" how does it look?

    100 GB RAM... pfewww...
    1 GB sounds better

250GB Hard drive sounds a little over the top, as well...

As for the server: Google "hosting"... you'll find dozens of plan offering several gigs bandwith and 500 or more MB of space for around $20/month.

Hmm.. What your budget? What do you want to do with that computer: games? 3D? Word Processing/Internet? More info is required.

P.S. Get AMD, at this moment, they are better that Intel.

    1) My budget really is no problem, just as long as it is under 5,000.

    2) I am planning to use it primarily for programming, but I'd play games on it too.

    3) I would prefer to own my own server rather than rent one too.

    4) Could I have an external server?

    2 P4 Xeon processors
    4GB RAM
4 250 GB SATA drives (raid setup)
    Gigabyte ethernet NIC
At least 1 Radeon 9800XT video card. (extended desktop?)

Hmmm... I seem to have become aroused.

    5000$? Games? Programming?

    AMD64 Socket 39 3800+ (Take 90mn if possible)
2 GO of DDR. (You don't need more to me but for future, leave yourself some slot open on your motherboard = Buy 1 Go Stick)
SLI MotherBoard with Raid 5 Capacity.
    2 6600GT in SLI.
4 LCD Monitor, 2 on each monitor. (Programming with 4 monitors is crazy).
    Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro.
    Creative 7.1 Speaker System
    DVD-Burner
3 SATA 250GB Hard Drive in Raid 5.

P.S. With that budget, dual screen is MANDATORY to my eyes!

$5k budget...hmmm.. exactly how many teraflops did you want this machine to run at? Full-on voice recognition/plain english translation to self-programming?

/me cleans the mess of drool off his keyboard.

Seriously guy, 5k is a LOT of hardware - definitely go raid5, dual processors, maxram, and multiple monitors... While you're at it, get one of those caddillac style rollaway server towers that weigh about 100lbs each. You know the ones - the old testosterone-laden boxes that says I AM GOD'S OWN SERVER on the side... hmmmmm maybe some neon too...
