Getting started..
Complete noob here, just getting started and I was wondering if anyone had any recommended texts I should read to start myself out on. Try to bear with me, I hope to become a bit more advanced in this before I start taking the classes for college credit.
Anyways, anything helps.

I'm more a web guy than books right now. I'd check through the Tutorials section to get an idea of some of the topics out there.
Some websites to browse through are CERT http://www.cert.org/ and SANS http://www.sans.org/
Computer books can be damn expensive so you might want to look around a bit before you plunk down your cash.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, I noticed. I've been reading alot online and I'm not sure if books would say much more anyways, guess I'll find out when they're more "required".

I would recommend brushing up on your linux. If your into security, linux has some awesome free tools. Google STD Knoppix
I wouldn't recommend buying any type of books. I pretty much found everything I needed online. Things you don't find, or have questions, were always open here at AO. I know they have severly helped me out.

try this one if you can find it cheap.
Hacking Linux Exposed, Second Edition
http://www.hackinglinuxexposed.com/
it's actually a lot of fun and usedful for getting an idea of how to secure linux/unix variants.
obviously, the hack probably won't work on most system - but definatly a good read and education.

Gezz, if you want to save thirty to seventy dollars then don't buy hacking exposed, that book isn't even worth the paper that I might decide to wipe my ass with. Here is the deal, they'll give you an introduction to what any moron already knows about and this is fallowed up with a URL to download something... page after page, book after book, wash rinse and repeat.
One of very few books I've seen which actually had something besides ink decorated toilet paper is exploiting software.

as stated in my post - i didn't say use this book to *hack*. use the book to get an idea how security working on a linux system. i personally learnt quite a lot from it (not all of us on here are such esteemed masters as yourself). i also said - get the book cheap. i got it in a discount bin for $10. worth the money IMO.

Well I read some of the newbie forum posts and tutorials, and even though I'm not exactly an expert I do have some past experience with some of this. I guess I'm lucky I was a dumb kid. lol
I do have alot to learn, so if anyone could point out some other good websites/links I'd appreciate it. Hope I'm not annoying anyone to much.
