URL BLOCKED
YO guys!
I am not quite sure if this has already been posted! Please help!
The ISP here blocks some URL like web pages that lets you preview a yahoo user profiles (i.e. http://profiles.yahoo.com/user123) and others. I had already written a request to them to unblock it but I guess they will never do it anyway for any reason. My question is this:
1. For enlightenment, is there any other way that this issue could be resolved and access the blocked URL?
2. If there is, what tools I could use to do it and is it legal?
As far as I could imagine, maybe it is a better idea for the ISP to block the bad websites instead (like sites detected with malicious codes or promote ADWARE/SPYWARE, sort of stuffs like that! At least they could HELP avoiding thousands of surfers fall on such malicious attacks).

Why has your ISP block these pages? Have they said why?

Proxy sites like anonymizer could probably help with this. Do a search on Google for "anonymous proxy".

See above. As for legality, depends on the laws of your nation. I do know that some nations in the Middle East, IIRC, block certain sites because it violates Islamic code (usually porn sites).
If it's a question of stopping spyware/adaware then perhaps the ISP should invest into something like WebSense and/or educating their users. Goes a long way compared to pissing users off (if users' aren't told why the block is in place) and thus encouraging users to circumvent the policy in place (which might violate the ISP's AUP and get your account suspended with the ISP)

Well, as of now I'm here in the Middle East and I know that they are strict in controlling media including the internet for the access of certain sites that they had found promoting PORNOGRAPHY, but I'm only checking my yahoo profiles.

Anyhow, I will try some "anonymous proxy" program (in this case, just to access my yahoo profiles). Might want to be careful and avoid breaking some law here.

That would make sense. I've heard of this. It's really hard to control something like that on the internet. I suspect at some point Middle Eastern nations will change the limitation to only allow certain sites and block all others since it's hard to narrow down what will have porn on it and what won't. It will, unfortunately, limit the information and knowledge shared into and out of those nations.

That's the problem with their filtering, at least they could have narrow the filter by page (hard to tell!)
I agree about the idea that information is limited, it's a pity there are too much information that they don't even know that exist in this world, well, someday they might open their eyes on such ideas for their own good.
And besides, that is the reason why internet had been there, to provide useful information, but control is another thing.
No harm done.

I would not try it using an anonymous proxy.................that sort of brings attention to yourself in those sorts of regime

Even anonymous proxy websites that I googled were "blocked" by the ISP... They're really serious!

I'm in the Middle East too .... In UAE for a vacation ... The ISP has blocked only those yahoo profiles with adult contents ....... They've blocked most of the anonymous proxy servers too...... Anyway if ur hungry for Porn,hacking tutorials and stuffs the isp doesnt want u to access, get urself a P2P application. I use Shareaza ! ..... Those guys (till now) can't do anything to stop this and technically i think there's no way to stop file sharing ( correct me if i'm wrong !) ... Don't do anything stupid here.... The cyber laws are kindda strict here !

They actually blocked the entire URL falling under it! 
-- I Might suggest the ISP instead to research on blocking specific pages or something like that! 'Coz it really drives me nuts not to update my profiles and such (small thing huh!)

Face up to it guys, you are living in a police state. The don't need warrants or subpoenas............the monitoring is already in place. As soon as you start doing anything remotely covert or unusual, you start drawing attention to yourself.
Remember you are in THEIR country and THEY make the rules.
