remote access to a computers files

I am looking for a way to conect to a computer that is on my network but not a member of the domain. I have a bet with a buddy. I have social engineered him and found out he has a excel spreadsheet with all his passwords on it. I want to connect to his c$ share search for all xls files figure out which one has his passwords on it and change the password. It is mearly to increase his paranoya. I can get the password off of the xls file I just need a way to get onto his c$ share and run a find and move the file from my computer unlock it relock it and put it back. This is just for fun and I have no malicious intentions.

No offense intended...but everyone here is supposed to take your word for that? I once asked a bank manager if I could have the combination to the safe for a class project...he didn't believe me either.

I would strongly recommend against doing this sort of thing in your work environment. Firstly because it is not what you are being paid for, and secondly because it could easily be misinterpreted.

If you are not on the same domain, don't you think that the activity will show up as suspicious?

Incidentally, your buddy should use some specialist password vault type software as MS Office is very weak security wise.

    Just my thoughts

I just need some help. If this is not the place to get help just let me know and I will look elsewhere. I am not into the power mind games.

I am the CIO. I am the one that determines suspicious behavior.

OK, but I hope you understood the logic behind my warning?

If you are CIO, just set up a new user account in his domain with admin rights....that should get you there.

And tell him off for sloppy storage of his passwords

It is his home computer that is connected to a dsl that comes straight into us on a frame t-1. I don't have access to his workgroup. I was looking for a hack to get info his file share. We are the best of friends. It is just to mess with his mind only. He is really paranoid about stuff so I just want to jerk his chain a little. No financial or permenant loss will occur just a little Sunday fun.

So it's a backdoor to your network with all the passwords written down in plain english for anyone to take and you're playing games instead of doing something about the problem???

You are on "mission impossible" if he knows anything about security...............

    1. Decent firewall, router and IDS
    2. Block incoming from your IP address
    3. Disable file sharing
    4. And the file won't be "passwords.xls".............it will have a strange extension that is set in associations to open with excel...................

Now if it were me, I wouldn't bother with all that, but "passwords.xls" would contain something quite different from passwords now that would jerk YOUR chain?

You did mention that he was paranoid.................he is also expecting you
