DRM industry association 'Marlin' announced - iPod users laugh heartily
CNN posted this earlier. Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and Philips have joined together to create standards for personal electronics that will recognize different DRM systems. So if you buy music from Sony Connect, you could play it on a Samsung portable. The first products are due this summer.
Personally, I'll continue to listen to plain old MP3's. I'm just glad I didn't see Apple's name in there...I don't think they're involved, anyway.

Imo, this could well be Apple I Tunes undoing.
I read some interesting articles this morning conserning DRM.

That's a GREAT talk by Cory. I'm a big fan of his.
Somewhere, I have an MP3 of it...recorded on the spot and he had a link to it...cost me $0.50 IIRC.
Yes it could be apple's undoing...but I'm not so certain. There is, IMHO, just enough "cool" factor to the iPod thingy (not just the device...the culture, the image...) that if Apple stay's their course, I'd bet they come out of it looking pretty good.
For example...I *REALLY* wanted the MP3 of Roger Waters and Eric Clapton singing Wish You Were Here at Tsunami-Aid (or whatever it was called), but it's an Exclusive from Sony Connect.com. So I do without.
I do without for a few reasons. I think DRM is tyrranical (sp?), and I think the RIAA and the MPAA are the latest "old guard" fighting tooth and nail against changing technologies, value systems, and beliefs of morality. Please, AO folks who argue for it's own sake, don't see that morality statement as an invitation to discuss 'morality and file sharing'. I'm not making any definitive statement on right or wrong, I'm just saying that 'morals have changed' in the last 20 years.
But because of all these things, I excercise a bit of self-control, and I indulge myself otherwise to make up for it, because Sony only get's my money for quality hardware...which I can find less and less of from them. Or they get it for a DVD of a movie I would like to own. But that one song, it's not worth the cost to buy, plus the problem with installing their software and buying their devices to listen to it. Sorry Charlie.
Ok, I'm done. Let the fur fly!

That may well be true. Apple have managed to servive as a business based, imho on the coolness of there hardware. Which will always attract customers, in much the same way as designer labelled cloathing, watches, etc..........................But although I Tunes is a success story at the moment, it is not what earns Apple a living from. So i suppose we will have to wate and let history be the judge.
Cory's arguments are very powerfull, but I think widely unknown. There is alot of rhetoric espoused by both sides of the DRM/Copyright fence. It was nice to find a well thought out and presented argument against DRM. I know as a customer, I do not want it. I put up with Decss on DVDs because I can see no benifit to copying a DVD to video and it takes up far to much room on my Hdd, Region coding is a joke, you can not sell a DVD player in this country unless it is multi region as no one will by them.
I would like to read an answere to Cory's lecture to Microsoft, from Microsoft. Anyone know if there is one out there?
