    wiping hard drive

i wanna wipe my hard drive and i was thinking of using boot and nuke, but isnt there something i can use to do a zero fill on the drive so that it will be back to the way it was when i bought it? is this what most hd wiping utilities like autoclave do? the autoclave web page just says that it "completely erases everything" but does it do a zero fill on all of the sectors? also, if i did a zero fill would the drive have to be low level formatted again? i've heard it's impossible to do a low level format on your own: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/L/LLF.html is that right?

Why do you need to clean your HDD that much? A simple fdisk should do...

Get a Knoppix-std disk and do a zero fill.

    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=1M

Will do it, so you know it will write over your partitions also.

I worked at a place where we had a big electro magnet for wiping old tapes and hard drives. You would place the reel of tape on this pad, pull a switch, and presto!

Darik's Boot and Nuke will do what you want and more. Plus its free. Just make sure you get it from the right spot, as I have heard of some other versions going around.

Try BCWipe from Jetico. This utility is used by the government when they drop sensitive/classified info onto unclass networks. Not sure about the full capabilities but I do know that they can now overwrite CD's and the like. Check it out..
