New Laptop
I am going to purchase a good laptop. Have about 5k USD for this. It is replacing my old IBM ThinkPad. I was thinking a MAC laptop, Sony Vaio, or maybe something comparable. This will be my security laptop.
The requirements I can think of…
-Linux runs perfect
-Will use my GPS (USB) and Senao PCMCIA Nic
-Would like to have a serial interface for Cisco console (or maybe need a special USB cable?)
-Biometric login to protect my corporation passwords
-Gig Ethernet over Cat5
-Long Battery life
-Light in physical weight
Can anyone think of anything else I would require?
Do I need good memory for Kismet, IRS, Cain and Abel, etc? Or can I sacrifice Processor speed and desktop memory for weight.
Thanks.

For your linux, you'll probably need to format your drive and reinstall both linux and windows on a partitioned HDD. Or do you only want linux? If that's the case then just format HDD and install linux.
99% of all laptops have USB now a days, I doubt you'll have a problem with that... Same goes with serial ports... You also won't need that NIC card of yours, most laptops come with an onboard NIC
Biometric login... that could be tricky...
Gig Ethernet... WTF? Cat 5 should be more then enough...
For long battery life, get cetrino technology...
Light physical weight, that's something you'll have to judge for youself...
I'm not going to find a laptop for you, I did this to help you find the laptop you want yourself...

A good advice regarding your wireless LAN connection for a laptop... would be considering Intel Centrino brand new technology...

Did you Check Thinkpad X40?
Advantage: Very Thin, Very light (Starting at 2.7 lbs), Gig 5, can have 1.5 GB of Ram
Disadvantage: Small Screen (12 inch), you need to buy a lot of option (USB CD-ROM, USB Serial Port, there is no Linux Driver from the website but I'm pretty sure a IBM can run Linux without problem!
Quick note: Any IBM laptop will require you to buy a USB Serial Port.

Thanks
Great Advice. I am down to the IBM X40 and the Sony T Series.
The Duck; I can't stress the importance of the Senao Nic the 300mw amped setup I have is sweet for our large campus. Unless there is any way I can tweek the internal Wireless, which I am not energetic to do in the first place. I am sure both of these laptops will support them. And thanks for that link!
Probably a full linux install.
Thanks again.

Oh, well, that shouldn't be a problem anyway, with the money your willing to spend, most laptops will come with a PCMCIA slot.
I also suggest taking a look at toshiba laptops, I have had great luck with them. Not to mention I got a free 5 year warranty!
