    Recovering important data

Does anyone here have any suggestions on legit companies that do extensive data recovery. The drive itself is broken. It will not spin. It seems that I will need a reputable company to disect the drive and read the platters to get the information back. Any ideas? Companies? I don't mind shipping the drive out either.

P.S. Backups work great - when you use them!

You will first have to do the cost versus loss calculation ........

The cost WILL be extreme, mainly because it's a specialised market, so you have to decide just how much the data is worth ?

Is it a business machine that failed ?
Or is it your personal one ?
Cost alone would mitigate against recovering for a personal HDD. [ I know that if it IS personal, and it includes pictures of your kids / mates etc, that to you it is priceless. But how much are you prepared to physically pay ?

Or, if it is personal, store it until such time as technology catches up, and you can get your very own SOHO data recovery tool.

Business is different, to the extent that they WILL know EXACTLY how much it is worth.

    Luck to you.

Currently, the cost looks like its $750-850 dollars, not too bad for the data on the disk...pictures/documents etc. I will check out drivelabs....are they reputable?

I have no idea, just a link I came across. Stood out because of reference to "broken drives". My advice would be to do a thorough search, check out the companies who are capable of doing what you require, and get quotes, prices, timescale etc, before coming to any decision. This all depends of course on how valuable the data required, and how quickly you want it. Even with professional data recovery services, it is not guaranteed you will get back 100%, this is very unlikely with a broken drive. Ask how much they estimate that they could possibly recover
