I cant see why you would NEED to check your yahoo account but as everyone has said, talk to the admins about getting access to it. There is probably a valid reason it is blocked but..... you can always use gmail that uses ssl and should allow you to get on
Duct tape.....A whole lot of Duct Tape

If you don't see the common aspects then there is no helping you. In BOTH cases you are bypassing something that is preventing you from getting to something. This prevention isn't by accident. It is put there to stop you from getting to something. Yes, stealing cable is illegal, and bypassing the firewall rules is probably against the user agreement you have with your employer. It sounds to me like you asked your "friend" in the IT department to let you bypass the rules and he told you he couldn't do it just for you because he doesn't want to jeopardize his job.

I think you need to ask around, I cannot believe that the school does not use e-mail, and the internet? I can understand that it will not be available on the main network so the students don't abuse it.

Do you have a work email account? If you have important email maybe you should have the yahoo account forwarded to your work account?

I have been talkin to them as we speak. there is no way for dial up because there are no phone lines in classrooms
Naturally not, and you shouldn't be reading your private e-mail whlst you are in there

All you need for dial up is a $20 56.6k modem. That is plenty fast enough for e-mail. Surely you have offices, staffrooms etc with telephone points?

First off, zenger I said that about 6 replies ago, lol. I dont think he likes that it will solve this problem but still wont let him view other webpages he is not talking about.

I worked for the department of education for a bit like I said before. most of the filters from what I have seen are applied at a server that is the first to reciveve the internet connection. They lock down most teachers just as much as they do the students. The only way I have seen around these filters (the one I dealt with most of the time was websense) was to connect to the net before it hit the filter (not possible for about 99.9 percent of the schools population, and not without a very good reason, email was not a good reason lol) If the mail is important forward it to you work account (all teachers have them, becasue if it is work related then they cant force you to create your own. so if you really do have use for a work related email account you are provided one.)

There was one way I found being a crafty student at the school (yes, I was a student and employee of the same school) but im not going to share that with you, becasue now it sounds like you are about to create a new profile and say you are your friend who works with the school, lmfao. god I hope you are not so stupid as to try this.

so lets make it simple. if its work related email, use your work related email. as far as I know for most states the email addresses are <username>@k12.<state abbreviation>.edu for public schools. for universities an private schools they are <username>@<schooldomain>.edu

yahoo does do forwarding, so why put your friend in a bad situation (yes, asking him/her to break the ruls is a bad situation) when the answer to your question is so simple.

    rules

You all are taking this to an extreme!!! First of all, it isn't against any rules. The computer technician, the only one we have can use his judgement. It is NOT to block teachers from any site!!!! It is only to prevent students from logging into chat rooms ect. I now have the proxy site, it was given to me by my IT !!!!! So thank you all for your hateful and negative comments. I only thought I would try this forum for some quick help. My children are at the beach with my parents for spring break, they sent me some photos to my yahoo acct. and I simply wanted to view them today. (Just so noone will make a smartass comment, my kids attend private school and they do not have spring break at the same time that I do. I am at work!) I dont know how this turned into breaking rules and laws. There are no rules or contracts regarding my internet use! This is ridiculus. I can use my planning period as I wish. We have sharing capabilities and we have read this forum together. Neither of us understood why or how this turned into a bashing session for me. I have learned the hard way that you guys arent here for advice only to belittle and take your frustrations out on others. But, thanks anyway.

Somehow I scrolled past your post. Sorry bout that.

Raindarkblue: If you haven't noticed, this is a security website. That means the people here are concerned about enforcing and creating security, not on telling people ways to bypass it. You say there are no rules in place on your network? I will bet you your job that that is not true. Can you surf porn at work? Can you download illegal software at work? No. There are rules that say you cannot do this stuff. Unless you school system is looking for a law suit, they made you sign some sort of acceptable use policy for using their network. You might not remember this but I bet you did. Does this mean that going to yahoo on your break is a bad thing? No, it just means that they have deamed it off limits. Security is about establishing and enforcing rules and oddly enough thats what this site is devoted to.

You said that it is against the rules for the students to do such activity? How do we know that you're not a student there?

Sorry man, there is this thing call "professional courtesy" you know where one IT professional does not give advice on how to get around another the security of another. You wouldnt give the answers to another teachers test to their student would you?

I am glad you got it resolved, but we had no way of knowing who you are, like you said, you came here for quick advice. We arent about telling everyone how to break things, and you should be glad we are the way we are. How would you like it if one of your students came here and asked us how to hack your yahoo account and we told them, now all that time you spent getting your pictues has gone to waste becasue someone just deleted them. We did give you several solutions to your problems, you chose to ignore them. That proxie system they have sounds very good actually. I wish my school would have had something like that.
