External HDD + Fedora Core 3
Hi,
I have a LaCie Mobile External Hard Drive and nothing happens when I plug it into my Fedora Core 3 laptop. I have already asked around on Linux Questions but even with all the replies I got, I still couldn't fix it. So, I thought I would ask here! Here is the reslut of my "fdisk -l" WITH the External HD plugged in:
Code:
Disk /dev/hda: 20.0 GB, 20003880960 bytes
16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38760 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 1 951 479272+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda2 * 952 23001 11113200 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 23002 36727 6917904 83 Linux
/dev/hda4 36728 38760 1024632 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 36728 38759 1024096+ 82 Linux swap
Sorry about the formatting, but I had to copy it out because my FC3 laptop isn't on my home network yet and I can't use my external HD yet! Oh, btw I am dualbooting SUSE 9.1 and FC3 and accidentally created 2 swaps (lol).
Do you have any ideas? Thanks in advance,

run a dmesg or tail /var/log/messages after you plug in the drive, does it give any errors?

Here is the dmesg (relevant parts only):
Code:
usbcore: registered new driver hiddev
usbcore: registered new driver usbhid
drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: v2.0:USB HID core driver
uhci_hcd 0000:00:07.2: UHCI Host Controller
uhci_hcd 0000:00:07.2: irq 9, io base 00001800
SELinux: initialized (dev usbdevfs, type usbdevfs), uses genfs_contexts
uhci_hcd 0000:00:07.2: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1
hub 1-0:1.0: USB hub found
hub 1-0:1.0: 2 ports detected
I think it doesn't work though because I have USB 1.1 drives, and according to this site LaCie Mobile HD's don't tend to get as much power as they need from USB 1.1, only from 2.0. I might have to buy a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card for my laptop and that might work (you can probably tell that I've been speaking to LQ people ). Thanks for your help though.
