Ubuntu live CD
I finally got my personal UBUNTU distro mailed to my house.
But when I run the live CD, it got hanged.
The last thing that I saw is given below.
I can't figure it out
It goes like this:
Detecting hardware to find CD-ROM drives.
Loading module 'ade-generic' for 'Linux IDE Support'...
I've got x86 pc: p4, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, etc.
Please revert back in case of any querry.

Try cleaning the Cd and Cd drive.
Also, will it start from within Windows (it should)...........you may have a defective CD. Mine works just fine, and your setup is certainly well within the requirements.

Shouldn't that be "ide-generic"? If what nihil suggested didn't work, check your IDE cables, and make sure they are firmly connected.

Plugging the cables did worked.

Are you saying that you reseated the IDE cables then it worked?
If so, how did it work with Windows before?

What's even stranger is that it's a distro that runs off of a CD. Typically you can run CD based OSes without a HD in the machine. This is the case with many of the Knoppix distros.
