Pretty much it looks like everything is spyware/virus related but I wanted to post this here and get y'alls take on this. What should go? He's got an old system that's not very fast at all and he's not tech saavy at all. I recommended wiping his system clean at one point with a reformat but he doesn't have an OS disc on hand.

IMO HiJack this should not be the first tool used.

turn off system restore then go to control panel>add remove programs and uninstall all the "unwanted" spyware producing programs that you can, next run spybot S&D, Adaware and his anti-virus software. then post a new HJT log.

I'm pretty sure I told him to disable that the last time we talked but I'm not sure. Also he has so much stuff on his system that it is hard if not next to impossible for him to download anything. I think by the grace of god I got him to get Ad-Aware SE last time. I'd like to get his system functional enough to be able to get S&D on there as well. His stuff is so bad that sometimes his system actually shuts down if he tries running AIM and IE at the same time.

i dont know if your familar with BartPE but it's a Bootable XP based CD. It's made using PEbuilder and requirers an XPsp2 installation disk. this will give you complete access to the hard drive without loading the infected/infecting drivers When making the CD you can include the software of your choice or you can just build it with the defaults (which includes stinger) and run Spybot off of a thumb drive. it's really a very handy thing to have.

I'm not familar with that program, I'll look into it. Got a link to where I can download that from? Sounds like its just a bootable disc image which is a pretty cool idea. Will this CD work on an ME machine (which is what he has)?

Hello there! You friend has problems - but you already know that.

IMO, I would not tell him to turn off system restore quite yet. Better an infected restore point than none at all!

Here are some things that need to be fixed with HijackThis. THis is just to keep the debris down to a minimum so he can run some real programs!! This is in no way a complete cure-all!

Please select the following with HijackThis. With all windows (including this one!) closed, please select "fix.”

THen have your friend run AAW SE, the Panda online scan, Spybot S&D.

Good luck! There will probably be more to do.
