    Q. Backup sulutions

    Hi.

I tested some back up programs like "Acronis true image" and ghost to create/restore partition images but I still do not know what to chose. Do you know some other program that you can recommed?
Which of this two are better or someone else?

Is this for use at home or in a server/enterprise setting?

You'll get different answers depending on where you need to use it.

At home I've used Norton Ghost and Powerquest Partition Magic.

All depends on what you are backing up???

XP has a nice backup for home users...

    Servers are totally different beasts...

    More details??

For home use. Most for windows xp.
I like to test different kind of programs o it good to have sothing that can restore disk fast and have some more functions.

And may be backup of workstation to server (if get some).

Well...are you looking to backup the whole workstation...such as imaging???

    or data\system settings??

XP comes with a backup to file option...which can point to a mapped drive.

Although you do have to reinstall the os first to restore a whole systems settings.....

You could use an imaging software to image the system back on to the client...will work great ...as long as there are no hardware changes.

Hope you have large drives on the server

Yes for imaging for the first.

For this "Outlook mail"/Winregistry/files I tested orlogix-"backup my pc" that not worked as want, need somthing else do not know what to chose for this too and asking if you have something to recommend.

But what software is better, what to chose?
Or what you using for this?

//windows build in backup is not good enough, too slow and cannot image drivers/partitions
//I have had some configuration problem with it too.

Well I think you will have to use ghost or something similar as Aspman suggested

I use spare machines for major failures of a basic WS.

All user data is...(should be ) ...stored on the server....so it doesnt matter what machine a user is at...they can access there files\mail\apps.

Then there are the users that have specialty\custom apps....I have the ws backup the apps data directories to the server..through mapped drives.

    When I used google....Norton Ghost

I got ALL kinds of stuff to look at

Honestly now-a-days, Ghost is gonna be your best option for imaging in home/small business environment. I really like PowerQuest and in many ways it was superior to Ghost but Symantec bought it and sank it of the coast of Mexico. There are other similar programs but you will find Ghost's HDD detection the most up to date and complete as far as SATA and SCSI drives being recognized properly from the boot disk.

I recomend not to trust on windows backup utility, i have used sometimes, and when i needed to restore data, he could not keep the data readable, it keep staying corrupt.

Im not sure for home user backup utility, but there's alot of sofware out there, but i don't think that a ghost is your best solution, because or data keeps changing, so that means that you will always have to keep ghosting all of your system.

    i would recomend this steps.

    1) After installing your system and programs, ghost your hard-drive, this image will be your Base system, everytime you want to reinstall your system(includes installed programs), you have it in one single image.

    2) Find a backup utility adjusted for you.(maybe NovaBackup)

    3) With a second hard drive, you can make RAID , or you can use disk mirror

    4) Have a backup rotine.

    5) Have a rotine to test your backups, so that you make sure that the data is not corrupt.

I think this steps is enought, but there is always other solutions.

For the backup software, there is one that i would recomend, but i think its not ajusted for you. Its ArcServ, in my opinion it's the best backup software out there, but this is a software for a large data backup, usualy used in Medium/large Bussines.
