    Re: This is the one.

This is the movie that inspired me to become a L337 H4xx0r. I hope your students will enjoy it as much as I did. David Lightman is an inspiration to all of us.
As far as the whole "l33t h4xAaRr" jazz goes... the movie (hackers) holds the most truth psychologically than any other movie like it. For example, there is no point where these kids do anything they find particularly enjoyable and fun with computers in the sense of lets say a hobby or something of that nature... the only time they did anything was when they felt a need to impress others.

Which brings me to this... Pink floyd - The wall.
Lets just say that I've alienated myself from others and just leave it at that.

...and to follow up on Egaladiest's comments...the thread starter made it obvious he was looking for Hollywood movie titles. Maybe not in the title, but definitely in the post.

    This yahoo flies in and
#1 starts asking for crap that he obviously didn't try to search for
#2 finds a thread vaguely related only in that a few of the words may apply in a minimalistic sense to his search

That deserves a touch of smack down, in my opinion.

The subject: Looking for hacker/security movies

    The forum: Newbie Security Questions

The subject line: I was thinking of having them watch a moving with hacking / security over break and then discuss after returning from Thanksgiving break.

Sorry I didn't correlate "Net" and "Hackers" to hollywood movies right away, that was a long time ago. I thought he wanted educational videos since he is a teacher. My post was a suggestion, and a request for someone else to post the link, since I lost it.

"#1 starts asking for crap that he obviously didn't try to search for"
    Tried, didn't find it actually.
"#2 finds a thread vaguely related only in that a few of the words may apply in a minimalistic sense to his search"
Hacker/security movies falls under "Hacking a WEP Key" I'd think.

I didn't realize these forums were so confrontational.

    Thanks XT.
Obviously I wasn't the only one that misunderstood his request. But damned if
I do, apparently that hurt a lot of people.

A couple off the top of my mind...

    Takedown (AKA Operation Takedown) [1]
    Freedom Downtime [2]
    The Realm of Hackers [3]
    Sneakers [4]
    Johnny Mnemonic [5]
    Revolution OS [6]

    [3] http://www.abc.net.au/tv/documentari...es/s853348.htm
    [4] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105435/
    [5] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308808/

Don't forget to check out www.archive.org
Search for "hack" in "Opensource Movies"

The ones from archive.org are free to download and you won't require anyone to buy/rent a movie...

    Hack Tv
    Infonomicon
    DougTV
    systm (Formerly The Broken)
The Scene (very good about the life of a pirate/warez group)
    Pure Pwnage (pretty funny)
A lot of Hack in the Box Security Conference videos

I'll often watch the ones from archive.org in the hour or two that I have every day before class. Quite entertaining.

    For the future...

Get the audio files from the fifth hope... make for pretty good driving material since the radio all sounds the same...

    Egaladeist,

how does that in anyway prove what he was looking for. He said those are the only movies he could think of. Doesnt mean its exactly what he was looking for becasue if it was he wouldnt ask for more help. ****, I have people call me asking for things all day, half the time what they want is not what they ask for. In this case he wanted movies, not fiction.

damn me for assuming a teacher wanted an educational film. yea, he wanted a cake assignment, but any discussion is a cake assignment when you dont have to actually provide proof for anything.
Everyone is going to die, I am just as good of a reason as any.

    Hi XTC46,

If you read both my posts then you would know that I provided both...the cake assignment which was clearly movie related...

and what you said...the alternative...of which the ' search ' link was related.

I agree that a teacher might want the alternative...and I provided a source for it...but the post was to provide something for the kids to do that wasn't intensive...eg. movie reviews...because he didn't want to get into something heavier before the long weekend...and he explained that in his post.

My comments to you were in regard to what you said...
I think his was the best response of them all.
and I would agree if that was what he was looking for...but our posts were relevant to what he wanted...what he asked for...a movie to watch before the long weekend...something easy to give them to do over the long weekend: a movie review...if he had asked for something more intensive I would have posted differently.

Being that he's a teacher I can understand why you felt the way you did...maybe I felt the same way...depending upon the age of his class, maybe a hollywood movie review might be a little cheesy...but cheesy was what he asked for.

    Hey Hey,

Computer Movies.... the joy of the world ... or at least my world.

    Fictional
    -----------
    1) Hackers
    2) Sneakers
    3) The Net (oh come on.. you all know you loved it.)
    4) AntiTrust
    5) War Games
    6) The Matrix
    7) Swordfish
    8) Tron
    9) Code Hunter
    10) The Terminator (it was used in my security class for physical security)

    Non-Fictional
    ----------------
    1) Operation Takedown (I guess this could be debated where it goes)
    2) Hippies from Hell Documentary (http://hippies.waag.org/project.php)
    3) Freedom Downtime (http://www.freedomdowntime.com/)
    4) New York City Hackers (http://uit.no/breifilm/4276/ -- Site isn't english)
    5) The Code (
    http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/forums.asp?s=2&c=16&t=3170)
    6) Breaking The Code (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115749/)

That about sums up the list of movies... There's some good stuff in there... Hopefully it'll cover whatever you're looking for (and I know I covered many that were already listed... but if you're going to do something you might as well do it completely)..

    Peace,
    HT

Thanks to everyone for the ideas. They were very helpful. I had originally thought of something Hollywood, but after looking through some of the non-fiction ideas, I may modifiy the assignment.

    I appreciate your input.

Although a little outdated, Sneakers would be a good one since it portrays the true art of social engineering.
to SYN, or not to SYN. That is the question. -Shakespeare?
