A portscanner for those of us who haven't memorized the common ports map. It scans all common
ports between 1 and 1023 and reports open ports and their common use.

EDIT:
I'm so going to bed after this, lol, anyway, I posted because for one, I'm learning PERL, (Awwww, I finally stuck with a coding language... Sort of) And anyway, I wanted to post this and show people and of course, it allows me to read this and maybe edit it to make it do other things (like it could scan more ports and of course this would be fun for me to do and repost how I did it).
Remember I'm not a programmer, and I don't code much, I like PERL, and I did kind of.... OK so I can understand some C and C++.... And once I did get some crap working in this weird C script stuff I found online, but this is it, I don't do a lot in coding, but I'm starting somewhere now, and I like Networking so I'm trying to keep it close.

Maybe note somewhere that this is a TCP port scanner only?
You could also have it read the services from /etc/services if it exists, and then default to its own built-in list if it doesn't.

It should run fine on win32 btw. ActivePerl at least has IO::Socket.. Works the same as it's *nix cousin.

You could probably change how you do the socket a little bit, take an extra cmd line argument and do UDP as well...rest of the code could for the most part remain unchanged. And as far as a personal preference thing, would probably either reference /etc/services for the defined ports or keep a separate file so it didn't fill up your source so much (then just read the file in, for example $infile = (-f /etc/services) ? "/etc/services" | "myservices.txt"; and then just read infile (your services file would be myservices.txt if the file isn't found).

There is only one constant, one universal, it is the only real truth: causality. Action. Reaction. Cause and effect...There is no escape from it, we are forever slaves to it. Our only hope, our only peace is to understand it, to understand the 'why'. 'Why' is what separates us from them, you from me. 'Why' is the only real social power, without it you are powerless.

Thanks much I found this and was like wow this is something I could make into a neat project and would help me learn Perl much better and I've wanted to make a port scanner anyway to learn more about how a program works with TCP and things... Heh
