A shell account is a remote account that you create on a Unix Box (could be any other OS but its usually Unix) which lets you use the powerful features of Unix even if you are a windoze user (with restrictions of course). If you want unlimited access, you shall have to register and pay for the Shell. Otherwise it is usually free of cost and has utilities like IRC, C#, C++, Perl Compilers, mail etc.

You have to use telnet or other remote tools to connect to your shell account.

Bleh, thats not a bad reason to use it though. I used to use Telnet for those little "telnet games" and ****. Anyone remember hackerslab? I gotta admit though, SSH is better..

General Computer Discussion doesn't appear by default on the main page. You can change which forums appear on the front page for you by going to the Main Page --> left side column --> Edit Front Page Display.

You're thread was moved because it doesn't really have anything to do with security and seemed more like a general question about the definition of a shell account.
