Linux Security
I've just installed Fedora Core 3 onto a machine, which is connected with broadband to the internet.
I'm concerned about security, because I thought the general concensus was that a Linux OS 'can' be made more secure than a Windows OS. However i'm new to any OS other than Windows, and my ignorance with this new OS is worrying me.
I've got a firewall called Firestarter, but can't seem to download Hijackthis, so it will work on Linux.
I'd appreciate any links on software to get now, and any links to things I could read to improve my understanding and increase my knowledge.
I'm just starting a CompTIA certificate, and I thought gaining an understanding of OS's additional to Windows was something I needed to do; as this is a current weakness of mine. Any help or advice you could offer would be much appreciated.
Here's to removing ignorance...
Many Thanks,

Hijackthis is a windows program, no use on Linux..
Have a look through the tutorials section..

Even more so, HijackThis is a tool to identify InternetExplorer abusing stuff.. No IE on linux.. loads of other browsers..
Two tools for scanning your linux for trojans are chkrootkit and rkhunter..

Although I'm a Linux Fan, that is misinformation... We have many threads in AO on that subject that will provide you a wealth of info.

Agreed, while its good to experiment with news OS's, maybe you should read up on security before you throw a wide open machine on the internet. Its just like windows, it needs updates, patches and overall tweaking or it as just as insecure as the next operating system.

fyi - linux is not "more" secure than windows!! the same rules apply. you still have to patch regularly and harden servers.

Some good links there fox. :-)
IMO, Linux is just UNIX. And again, IMO, much simpler system to configure & secure than Windows - which I personally think is a very overly complicated OS. God, just the registry hive alone in Windows is a nightmare. Who came up with that moronic way to micro manage an OS.
