Google search for wifi topics with these keywords:

    yagi
    directional
    antenna
    cantenna
pringles (although, pringles cans are not exactly the right size, but they do a good approximation)

You can also go read a lot about this at the Netstumbler forums.

You can also read up on the competition at Defcon this year, where the previous winners beat their own record with some god-forsakenly-big 6-foot satelite dish or something.

There is a ton of info on this...I've never done it myself, but I know it's out there and doable.

Well, there ya go! I have an old microwave broadband antenna at my house. I used to have Sprint Broadband (formerly cheetah, I think), and this was the antenna. It uses standard coaxial cable, no idea on power limits or requirements. You can have it and all the hardware they gave me with it for $50 + shipping.

For the record, Sprint broadcasts the signal to these antennae from up to 19 miles away... 0.5 miles should be a cakewalk for this device.

Just watch out when in a big city, or in a tall tower lol.

Just build/buy a decent directional antenna and put one on both ends, it will work like a dream. be sure to encrypt the transmission though, you could run into some leeching wifi users lol.

    From the test

    -18 dBm at 124.9 miles!
WOW. That was amplified of course but WOW.
