Amazingly fast how quickly these updates are coming along!

"Nmap now prints the number (and total bytes) of raw IP packets sent
and received when it completes, if verbose mode (-v) is enabled. The
report looks like:
Nmap finished: 256 IP addresses (3 hosts up) scanned in 30.632 seconds
Raw packets sent: 7727 (303KB) | Rcvd: 6944 (304KB)

Added new "closed|filtered" state. This is used for Idlescan, since
that scan method can't distinguish between those two states. Nmap
previously just used "closed", but this is more accurate."

And finally, the work around for the "MS05-019" RAW socket break down.
Wooh, the windows version of nmap is back in the game!

Yes, nmap updates do come quite quickly. Unfortunately, your announcement of 3.81 is 6 months old. Release date was 2-7-05. Just keep an eye out for TheHorse13's posts about nmap realeases...he does a good job staying on top of that.

Soon we will see the fruits of the Google summer of code. From what I've seen already, the next build of NMAP will be KILLER.

A tutorial with new features will be carved up shortly after the release.

Really, so i am desperately waiting for the new version of nmap. Can u mention some of the new functions of nmap which are not present in older ones or which will make it 'KILLER'

Will the next version "KILLER" be a GUI?.
I am tired of using the CLI version.

There has always been a GUI. See NmapFE as in Nmap Front End.

Yes i know but that was a flop show ( they actually stopped recommending it to people,instead asking them to use the CLI version)

Note that both new GUIs will be multi-platform

Follow the link there to learn more about the capabilities of one GUI.


In addition, I find it worth to mention that good software design separates
the user interface from the actual "core" routines. There is no real answer to

because nmap's "core" is not a nice interface! One could argue, however,
that a good presentation of gathered data is important as well - and might
turn a very useful tool into a "killer" application. Myself, I prefer to feed the
output of such tools as nmap in my own analysis programs, and thus, the
"core" functions are of more importance to me and tip the scales whether
the tool is a "killer" application or not.
