    Question Its ok...

UBCD sounds great but..... Has anyone had any luck with the UBCD... i found it complicated to burn... maybe i had the wrong iso or something?..... But to give a good example of a boot cd.... i prefer to download a 98/me floppy .img file... if you find an .ima file try you can convert it to a .img file. Im sure a good program like nero burns boot cds with an .img file.... put all the tools you use on a regular basis for repairs or whatever your purpose is.... but I actually ran into a problem with the 98/me boot cds because they aren't ntfs compatible without some difficult to locate freeware.... so i would almost recommend like the suse 9.3 live edition..... just depends on what ur doing i guess?

Does anyone know if there is a windows xp live cd or something that would be very compatible with NT environment? I really don't have time to look it up but sounds like it would be cool.....

    Gotta get some sleep,

Looks like they have made some recent improvements. I'll get a fresh version. I have used previous editions of it with some success.

UBCD is awesome...but keep in mind, he's discussing UBCD-WIN, an entirely different product and group. It seem's to have a lot of good stuff as well; I've never bothered with it, because I didn't need to. UBCD did what I needed, or I had other means to fix things.

It does sound like a good tool to keep handy though, 'specially in a Microsoft shop.

    Since he didn't give it...

Whups, looks like he did give the link, after that super-long-assed post listing all the app's. My bad. (See what having good 'Memory' will do for you?)

No such thing as a good "MemorY". You just have to ban 'em all.

Yea I know of a real good one. Its called bartpe. It can be found at www.nu2nu/pebuilder Also the cd being discussed in this thread is based off of bart so it should be just as good if not better. I am planning on playing around with it when I get to work. Might as well do it when I am on the clock

It depends on what you are doing for whether or not these "ultimate" boot cds work for example I accidentally corrupted my ntoskrnl.exe in windows2000 the other day. Booting with the ultimate boot cd didnt work as I could not access any windows partitions. I had to use the recovery console in the end. This is to do with the administrator having to be logged into the system to be able to do anything to the comp. I mean well... duh. So don't waste a CD-R on the boot cd unless you are certain you can use it effectively. Ultimate boot cd is now my new coaster. Alongside windows ME.

How did you manage to corrupt the ntoskrnl with a live cd? Hacking at the bits? As for reading partitions...I'm not sure about that. Usually, for windows all I do with UBCD is clear the admin password, then I boot into windows. Physical access == Pwn the box.

Actualy you can acsess the windows partitons with it if you know what you are doing. At least you can with bart pe which it is based off of. And looking at the list of included aplications I see at least one that I use to acsess windows partitions on a daily basis. I work for a very large retail chain as a member of thier pc repair/upgrade staff. 7 out of every 10 computers we repair are due to virii. One of the first things I do on a virus laden computer is to run scans and cleaners from a bootable CD such as this. Before I do that though i use the same boot cd to erase temporary files and system restore information that is stored by windows xp. So you might want to sit back and actualy mess around with it on a system that you arent feeling the preasure of trying to repair to get a feel for what exactly you can do with it.
