Why not just attach a name, a reason, and a reasonable limit (a couple a day sounds fair). If they are a ***** it will be obvious. If they have posted, they will be negged, if not, they will be banned by the mods.
/edit
Which I guess is to say, why not get rid of bumping altogether ? A one line post to reposition a good thread is not such a problem. If there is no good reason, they will be negged.

why are you set upon taking the ability away from users - if you are going to do that why stop half way just get rid of the feature altogether!
we dont need to restrict who has access - just how they can use it.....and by saying "mine is the only idea that neg liked" does not make it any more valid than any others supplied (no offense Neg) but that is just one persons opinion.

And why are you set on not reading what I'm saying? I did NOT say it was the ONLY idea neg liked.

I am still in favour of only allowing the original thread starter to bump a thread. I say this because they are the only ones I can see who would need to, if they had not had a reply.
If they have had a reply and it did not work, or they need more information, then they should add a post to that effect. Similarly, anyone else should add a post (I believe Hesperus made that point?) That will automatically bump the thread together with a reason.
Thinking back, the only time I have seen strange "bumping" has when people have been causing mischief, or someone appears to have hit the button out of curiosity or by mistake. I think that the original poster idea covers this?

Hrmm, I like Gore's idea..
You can only bump when you get a custom title.
That's probably the best one I've heard. I'd either implement that, only allow thread starter to bump (because then TheSpecialist can't bump anything), or only allow Mods/Seniors/Addicts/etc) thus requiring you to be here for awhile and all that for you to bump. The system would have weeded you out by then if you were a "troll account".
Anyways.. I'd just like if something was done.

foxy: I don't know if you were serious, but that's not a half bad idea.. I'd second it. Although right now, I'm ready to second anything.. but yeah, good idea IMO.

Of course it was serious
It would sort out ALL the issues being discussed.
AND it HAS to be the easy option, just chop some code out ............
just don't ask ME which bit of code

Agreed.

True, I'm liking it..
just don't ask ME which bit of code
Don't worry, I don't want them asking me which bit of code either.. my luck, I'd erase the AP system.. and Negative..
