Drop to a command prompt and type ipconfig /all

    What do you see??

    Can you ping 127.0.0.1 ????

What kind of LAN is it??

Do you get an IP address from a dhcp server\device??

Test with your nic card to another PCI slot or another computer. If not , reinstall your windows.

This is a clean install already....I do not think reinstalling will help.

What we have to determine is...if it is software...improper configuration of the NIC and protocol

Or if it is hardware....Bad NIC cable etc.

Suggesting another slot is a good one...

That first link wasn't the wizard I was thinking of, I didn't realize until I looked further down the page. Now the site won't let me edit the post.

Do the ' ipconfig /all ' from the command prompt. Tell us what it says.

I will try to throw out a few things because I don't know the specifics of them problem.

It would help to know a few things, like the other OS's on the LAN, or if your just trying to connect to a cable modem/dsl.

If you are trying to connect to other computers in a LAN make sure you try to ping yourself in the command prompt. ping 127.0.0.1

This is to check to see if tcp/ip is installed and working properly.

Also are you sure the connection isn't working at all, or can you just not see a shared folder on the other computer? If that is the case it could be because windows 95/98 and 2000/xp take a few extra steps in my experiences for sharing files. Make sure that you create a user account on the windows 2000 box and then make the same account with windows 95/98 to log in to.

Just a few things to try.

Is the lan card new, or you have reinstalled win2K ?. Does it work under Linux (if you have)

I'll get him to checkwith Knoppix and try "ipconfig /all" (of course returning output). We'll go from there. ^_^
