Does anyone know of a program that can completely hide or appear to hide your IP address? or send e-mail anonymously without show any user identity?

Forgive me if this sounds like a blow-off. Its not.

However, if you search around the forums a little you will find many threads on these two topics. Have a look around, do some investigating, and if you still have questions there are plenty of people here who will be glad to answer.

"completely hide or appear to hide your IP address" >> Your identity can never be completely hidden. There are ways that would make it "appear" that you were hidden, but if someone wanted to know who you were badly enough, they could trace you.

Then never use or access that account again, from anywhere. But, be aware that if the authorities wish to trace you badly enough, that they still would be able to by physical means.

Most libraries I know of require a Valid State ID or Drivers License in order to get an account at a library. So, that is not annonymous either.

There are several ways to "hop" around to make it look like you are somewhere you really are not.. just be very cautions and make sure you KNOW exactly how your traffic is going to flow. A good understanding of networking and routing would help you a lot.

I wanted to send an annonymous email to crimestoppers to report some very unethical and illegal activity I knew about. They have an "annonymous" web form, but I knew better than that. I attached to an open wireless access point VERY far from my house and then used a series of open proxies. They COULD trace it... but it'd be a whole lot of work. Even if they did trace it back to the first hop... my name could in no way be traced to that account. I'm sure I could have taken it further... but I was just reporting to the authorties... not really trying to avoid them that badly.

Completely hide your IP? Hmmm, I don't think so. Doesn't your ISP log *your* initial point of entry onto the Internet? You might be able to use a proxy server to *assist* in a little anonymity but not much.

If you connect to an anonymous SMTP server and send mail out port 25 which doesn't have any type of authentication to verify user, your IP address will be in the 'e-mail headers' and anyone who can read email headers (which is very easy) will see your IP address in the headers.

TOR (with Privoxy) is about as good as it gets. All IPs (destination and source) are encrypted through a series of random and changing proxies such that no single one can know anything of value.

Question : The faqs say it is vulnerable only to a global attacker, ie, one who can see both ends of the proxy chain, and then only by judging the timing of the packets. What kind of attacker would have this perspective ? I have looked around for the answer but haven't come up with anything, though he often comes up in theoretical discussions of security . . .

If you're smart you'll look at it this way: Your ISP is like an EP3 spy plane, a data vacuum! So whatever data you don't want seen..... don't send it through your ISP. People act as if there is no middleman with their connection. The only gov I know that won't give you up for breaking international laws even when pressed is kim jong il in nkorea. He surfs kiddy porn all day.

And words are picked up by Echelon, another juggernaut of a data vacuum. Go ask the Euro's about the British listening in on their trading communications.

Your question is shady so I doubt anyone will tell you a smart way to do it.

O.k. thank's everyone, firstly I have done a "little" research and testing i.e. HideIP, Proxyway etc. Some sites 'appear' fooled and report a different IP address to mine, but if you go on an IP identity site i.e. www.auditmypc.com it will display my fake IP (within HideIP) but then display my real IP!

and secondly, (the e-mail anonimity), I just wanted to play a prank on someone at work - I used a proggy called 'Pegasus Mail' which showed my fake identity and then put my real identity in bracket's next to it!!!!

Anyway look's a bit futile searching from what you guy's say!

It's often a good idea to use it before you post.

You can make your IP more difficult to find but you can't hide it completely.
The safest IP to use is 127.0.0.1

That's a dangerous game. Part of my job it to hunt down staff who play pranks at work.
Some of them aren't here anymore.
