    Celeron??

    Ok pricing new laptops...

My hardware guy is telling me there is no real big difference with the new celerons...that they have come a long way since first introduced.

I have a centino chip coming in $300 + more

    Anyone have thoughts on this??

Mrs |ce just purchased a celeron not too long ago. Takes a bit longer to boot up than my duron, but otherwise it rocks right along. Keep in mind that the computer is your tool for doing what you want to do on it - if you want a general purpose/business/small gaming laptop then a celeron's fine. If you want to do some heavy gaming you might consider something a bit more buff.

I don't know for sure so this is mostly hearsay..

What I do know is that the centrino stuff (p4mobile + intel chips (bridges, lan etc..) + intel wifi) is realy good and also quit efficient (batery life).

The celeron's don't have the cpu frequency stuff the p4 mobiles have (not sure, heard it somewhere) so would be less power efficient.

If you can spend the extra 300something, I would..

Here's a link from 04 I don't think much has changed since then.

Anyway, IMO celerons are fine for average computing. I wouldn't task them with gamiing or compiling large source files.

Also, they seem to overheat more. Again just my opinion

    Many thanks for your replies

Laptop is to be used for mostly email and remote access while away or at home.

VP also runs a program that measures rooms for speaker placement...sendng signals out and measuring response with microphone in.

I have an email to the softwae co...in regards to hardware minimum requirements for this program

Just wondering as the celeron coms with way more features....bigger screen,hd, etc for less price....

    Thanks again.

My view would be if it is to be your only/main machine go Centrino. If it is a part time, mobile device then the Celeron should be OK and better value for money.

Obviously a lot depends on what you are wanting to do with the box, and how much you will use it.

I would personally go Celeron on price because I don't like laptops anyway I only use them if I have to.

Have you had a look at Athlon based laptops. Acer have some good machines at reasonable prices.
