There are a number of possible causes for this sort of thing
1. Corrupted files
2. Software clashes
3. Badly fragmented files
4. Windows 98SE (there are known shutdown issues in some cases)
I do not think it is hardware because it seems to be related to the "my documents" folder.
In SAFE MODE run scandisk and then the hard drive defragmenter . Then try to open your documents folder.
Also, in normal mode, go to <start>, <run> and type in winfile.exe then try to open your documents folder using that utility (it is the old DOS file manager )
Please let ius know what happens.

Do you get any other prompts with error messages during the installation??My reason for asking is that you might have a corrupted install cd..??
