When Is Cracking Legal ? Have Your Say !
If there's some digital media you'd like to see cracked -- a copy-protected DVD, say -- then now's the time to tell the U.S. Copyright Office.
The Copyright Office is conducting a periodic review of anti-cracking provisions in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and is seeking submissions from the public
In the last review, the office allowed the cracking of web-filtering technology to see what sites are filtered out; bypassing copy protection on computer programs or video games available only in obsolete formats; cracking ebook copy-protection to allow the blind to use read-aloud software; and cracking computer programs protected by hardware devices, or "dongles," that are malfunctioning.
Hmmm. Hope that dongle malfunctions before it expires . . . .

I would like to know if it is legal to crack the copy protection on Playstation 2 games and on computer games. My kids go through the disks like wildfire meaning that I essentially pay £ 30 or £ 40 for about 1 months play. It seems very unfair to have to go out and buy a game i have already bought (even second hand). Why can't I master copy it?

Its legal to burn your games as a backup, pending that you still own the original. SImilar to site licensing when you purchase large amount of software.

That's the important bit. It's different in every country and can be different depending on whether it is data, music or video. Encrypted or unencrypted.
I don't think it is legal in too many country to break any copyright protection measures.
