Well I've discovered it's not the memory sticks at least. I've tried it with all sorts of sticks now, and I keep getting the same "cannot be written" message. Even during Windows setup!
This is also the same computer that I'm talking about in this thread.

Have you checked the processor fan/heatsink/bonding compound?
I often get memory related errors from processor overheat.
