Internet Security Systems' Unified Threat Management Product Receives the NSS Approved Award; Company Is One of the First To Obtain Approval Status in the UTM Category

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 19, 2005--Internet Security Systems (ISS) (NASDAQ: ISSX) today announced that its Proventia(R) Integrated Security Appliance received the NSS Approved status in a unified threat management (UTM) test conducted by The NSS Group. The NSS Group is the world's foremost independent security testing facility.

The NSS UTM test evaluates the performance, reliability, security effectiveness and usability of UTM products, based on seven main components: firewall, VPN, IDS/IPS, anti-spam, anti-virus, Web filtering and content filtering technologies. In order to obtain the NSS Approved status, UTM products must reach certain levels of attack recognition and detection rates, as well as perform well in other areas such as ease-of-use and management capabilities. The NSS Group believes that its methodologies will soon become the de facto standard for testing in-line UTM devices.

"With security threats increasingly becoming more sophisticated, more companies are realizing the value of having an integrated security solution designed to stop multiple threats in a single product," said Bob Walder, director of The NSS Group. "In this first round of UTM testing, our standards were set very high, and ISS' Proventia Integrated Security Appliance exceeded these standards and has therefore been deemed effective for use as an all-in-one gateway security device."

The Proventia integrated security appliance is a powerful and cost-effective device that stops multiple types of Internet threats before they penetrate networks and impact businesses. The all-in-one appliance ensures maximum network uptime, improving workforce productivity by blocking viruses, worms, hackers, spam and unwanted Web content. It is widely used by small- to medium-sized businesses and in branch offices of large organizations across multiple industries including banking, healthcare and large retail chains.

The Proventia integrated security appliance is part of the Proventia Enterprise Security Platform (ESP). This platform embodies ISS' vision for enterprise information security, delivering preemptive protection that is tightly integrated with existing IT operations to protect organizations from network- and host-based attacks.

"ISS has worked hard to make our integrated security appliance as comprehensive and conducive to customer needs as possible," said Greg Adams, vice president of product management at Internet Security Systems. "We are proud to offer our customers a product that has met the high NSS standards not yet achieved by most of our competitors."

The NSS Group offers a range of specialized IT, networking and security-related services to vendors and end-user organizations. Its awards are recognized worldwide as being the most desirable and essential when it comes to security products. The NSS Group is headquartered in Britain and has security and network infrastructure testing facilities in the South of France.
