Memory cannot be "written"

Windows 2000. My computer's gone all sorts of crazy.

I keep getting "Memory cannot be 'written'" errors that force programs to close. It usually happens, for instance, when I close out of Firefox. Also, anytime I try to burn a DVD in my writer, I get a blue screen and a physical memory dump, then it reboots. Meanwhile, it keeps slowing down and freezing up every time I turn around.

Usually this has been the sign of a memory problem, but I swapped out memory sticks, but to no avail.

I'm trying to swap out other hardware components one at a time in the meantime, hoping that will unveil a hint, but for now I'm pretty lost.

Can you post the exact message including any codes.

With memory errors the clue to what is going on is always in the code it gives!

I've done a little research on that particular error and found that it seems to occur when two security apps clash together on startup. Although most of the time it relates to Mcafee, which you don't have.

Can you post a new hijackthis log and we'll see if we can figure out what's happening.

Try reading some of those. If you get a solution out of it, or from any other source, can you tell me how you fixed it, I'm interested in finding out. Thanks.

Reload the OS Formatting first (and not the fast format) I have a disk called PC Check that is very usefull for running a hardware diagnostics test. It also could be related to a bad hard drive.

Memory probs tend to be more random IMH experience. Not usually the same thing over and over.
I'd go with Ghost_25inf suggestion of possible HD problems to start with. Get the manufacturer of your HD and download their testing tools. If there is a problem that should spot it. Could just be a bad sector. Time to back up just in case, if you haven't already.

I know this is probably a fairly obivious question but did you update any drivers recently or download any security updates? Do you have any strange messages in your event journal? Also is the code you posted the blue screen or the windows message. I tried to check technet but got no matches.

Could be an application not letting go of memory or trying to write to a memory space that is in use by another app.

I had a problem recently with The APC Powerchute...reboot fixed it. Since I removed the app...it no longer happens

Anything in the Eventviewer???


You can try and disable non essential services to and see if it still happens...

Also with any type of windows memory issues....reboot usually fixes it....

Did you recently update to SP4, there have been some issues with the updates compatability with some of the older programs.Windows 2000 SP4

Haven't noticed anything seemingly related in Event Viewer yet, but I'll keep an eye on it.

Currently exploring everyone else's recommendations, will let you know what I find soon...
