    Help with PROCESSOR_LEVEL

hey i was playing around in cygwin (in bash) and i wanted to see my environment variables, so i typed the command 'export'. One of the environment variables was PROCESSOR_LEVEL and it was equal to '15'. I was just curious to know what exactly PROCESSOR_LEVEL corresponded to and what would happen if i altered the value set to PROCESSOR_LEVEL. Is there a good site that lists off a bunch of different environment variables and then defines them all? Also, some more information about the 'export' command would be great. I know i can go into my opinions and turn 'allexport' on and off, but i dont know exactly why this would help me or what it would do. some help would be greatly appriciated, sorry for asking so many questions but i am a n00b

And just where in hell do you think you have been?

I was about to post you MIA, KIA, or just plain AWOL............I just couldn't find a coin with three faces though...........guess the politicians must have them all?

The "processor level" you are talking about is almost certainly the "stepping level". It is a kind of batch/lot number....................if you mess with that you may well fetch up looking at a black screen.............like FOREVER

Get hold of something like Everest and check out your hardware specs..............you should find your processor specs in there.

My advice is don't mess with environment variables until you can design a computer (that does not mean assemble) and write an operating system. That stuff is way too deep

Ya jeez its been forever since i have been on this site! Still extremely helpful and useful though. Generally i can find the answers to most of my questions just by searching but occasionally i chime in asking for some assistance

Alright i guess i will just hold back for now when dealing with environment variables. I am reading O'Reilly's "Learning the BASH shell", but i am complete n00b when it comes to dealing with operating systems

Thanks again nihil and take care!

Steppings are like revisions and they are noted in the field values as E O/ N O/ M O/ etc... Intel has the CPUID program that will tell you the family, model, and stepping of a chip. CPU-Z is another program I use.

But I don't think that's what he's talking about nihil.... but maybe he is!
