Norwegian Mag reprints �blasphemous� Danish drawings of Mohammed

Norwegian Muslims on Wednesday, January 11, blasted an obscure magazine for echoing a Danish daily and publishing a set of caricatures offending Prophet Muhammad.

"The Supreme Islamic Council (SIC) condemns in the strongest possible terms the publishing of such offensive cartoons by Magazinet," SIC Head Mohammad Hamdan told IslamOnline.net over the phone from Oslo.

The Christian magazine on Tuesday, January 10, published the same cartoons that caused uproar in the Muslim world after first emerged in Denmark�s mass circulation Jyllands-Posten last September.

It printed the blasphemous cartoons in the name of "freedom of expression."

"What on earth does freedom of expression mean?" A furious Hamadan wondered.

Magazinet editor explains why he reprinted the cartoons:

"Just like Jyllands-Posten, I have become sick of the ongoing hidden erosion of the freedom of expression," Magazinet editor Vebjoern Selbekk wrote. The murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh in 2004 revealed "that we are not facing empty threats. We know that the freedom of expression in our part of the world is being threatened by religion that is not afraid of using violence," he added. Selbekk said he was not afraid of the prospect of facing the same indignation and even death threats that faced the Danish paper after it published the cartoons.

The Wahhabi Muslim World league reacts

�The cartoons published in the magazine�s Tuesday issue are offensive to the Prophet and they deliberately chose Eid day to launch a sinister campaign,� WML Secretary-General Dr. Abdullah Al-Turki said in a statement.

�This will not affect international relations but give rise to hatred in the Muslim world for such countries.�

Wow, that's pretty sad. I wonder how long it will take them to be completely dominated by radicals with their tails this far between their legs. A few jokes at Islam and both the UN and EU are ignoring freedom of speech! Amazing, Europe won't be conquered by religion or weapons, but by fear of not being PC. How pathetic. If they can't stand up against hurt feelings, Iran will be an interesting situation. "Let is snow, let it snow, let it snow!"

Where is the sane moderate peace loving Muslim world? Why is its voice so rarely raised in condemnation of Islamist atrocities? It is a question which has been raised in ever increasing urgency since 9/11 and not only by Westerners. A few Muslim commentators have raised it too, but they remained the exception rather than the rule. Last time I raised the issue , it was in the context of a number of cased involving the charge of “insulting Islam,” a charge which led to anti-Coptic riots as well as to the imprisoning a 78-year old Iranian Ayatolla and an Afghani editor of a woman’s magazine.

They remain silent on issues which are a result of their extremists, yet have the nerve to counsel the western world....on "Free Speech"

Leaders of Muslim countries have similarly shirked responsibility for the actions of their extremists. “The Arab world's silence is deafening,” wrote the St. Petersburg Times editors after the recent Iranian president’s declaration that “ Israel must be wiped off the map.”(What do you call this type of talk) This silence (with the notable exception of the Palestinian Authority) seemed strange even to Muslim analysts. After all, Ahmadinejad’s speech was an attack of Muslim governments which have moved towards accommodation with Israel. So some pundit suggested that "Arab states may be pleased if Iran is further isolated.” If so, they covered it rather well. When the UNSC gathered to condemn this unprecedented attack of one UN member against another, it was Muslim Algeria which not only failed to condemn Iran but made sure that the resolution will “condemn” but not “strongly condemn” that extremist country. Extrapolation from the case of Israel is misleading, some would argue. Perhaps, but Arab states offered similar protection to Syria following the murder of Hariri and remain silent about the mass murder in Darfur.

This whole story actually started out as a sort of "dare" by the cartoonists and journalists:

It all started with editors of Jyllands-Posten, a Danish newspaper hearing reports that artists were reluctant to illustrate a book on Mohammed for fear of Muslim retribution. So, they asked cartoonists to send them drawings of Muhammad. “The cartoons,” they argue, “were a test of whether the threat of Islamic terrorism had limited the freedom of expression in Denmark.” It should be noted that Denmark, unlike Germany, has no laws prescribing free speech. In fact, for years Nazis and Islamists have used Denmark as a safe haven from which to continue to promote their heinous totalitarian ideologies.

I like the reference to the safe haven by Nazis and Islamists history, talk about two faced.

What's good for the Goose is good for the Gander

Islamists may be happy to exploit Danish freedoms and publish material demeaning to Christians and Jews but what is good for the goose is apparently not good for the gander. The Muslim response came fast and furious. The Danish imam Raed Hlayhel dismissed arguments about free press arguing that "This type of democracy is worthless for Muslims. Muslims will never accept this kind of humiliation. The article has insulted every Muslim in the world." This same Imam shocked Danes when he said in a Sermon during Friday Prayer , that Danish women's behavior and dress invited rape (sound familiar Tedob1). In any case, Muslim organizations not only protested vigorously. The cartoonists received death threats which led to the arrest of a 17 year old. Threats to bomb the building led to the positioning of security guards around it.

This whole story is farcical.....if the weakneed EU leaders would grow some b**ls and enforce their countries laws on all of it's legal citizens, a lot of this crap could be avoided.

Start "Deporting" the troublemakers back to their so called paradises, and see how fast they change their tunes...........

Yes friends freedom of speech is a basic tenant of a free society and artistic expression plays a very large part in free speech. If some group is offended by some artists rendition then....WHAT!?! Theye've offended muslims? OMG! how dare they?


An update:

BEIRUT, Lebanon - The controversy over Danish caricatures of Prophet Muhammad escalated Monday as gunmen seized an EU office in Gaza and Muslims appealed for a trade boycott of Danish products. Denmark called for its citizens in the Middle East to exercise vigilance.

The Muslim world's two main political bodies say they are seeking a UN resolution, backed by possible sanctions, to protect religions after the publication in Scandinavia of cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad.
Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary-general of Organisation of the Islamic Conference, said in Cairo on Sunday that the international body would "ask the UN general assembly to pass a resolution banning attacks on religious beliefs".

All the great religions claim to be representing the will of the greatest or/only God of creation etc etc. their God is mighty, strong and beyond reproach. Their faith in that God brought them to life, will take them through life into the eternity beyond.

BUT it's all lit up for the fragile little web it is by the over reaction to any little criticism or dissention from the word of the mighty or its followers. If their faith is so strong then something so trivial should be laughed off and dismissed out of hand.

Yeah I should have said "plea", but he went on to say it was a "Test" to see if anyone would take up the gauntlet, so in a way, it's a dare???........In other words, would anyone dare to try and do this....?
This last paragraph in the article pretty much sums up the ideological differences between the religions/states?

One of the most amazing things about this whole situation, is that it really shows how little the Muslim world really understands about the concept of freedom and even government. I know the Renaissance was a distinctly European event, but did the Middle East completely miss The Enlightenment and perhaps every movement since? It seems to me like that whole region is just stuck.

I know every generation thinks their will be the last, but I can't help but feel very disturbingly omnious that WW3 will occur in my lifetime because of something like this.

Actually BBallad I rather see Islam being at the stage Christianiaty was at about 600 years ago. That is about the differance in age between the two religions. The big differance of course is that Christianity was in a position to enforce its religion throught its military might but Islam isn't. Luckily for us .
