    thanks for the info on the commands. Yes my router is set up for dchp and os is set for same. For some reason it would not ping outside ip address. I am installing a different distro to gain some more knowledge. Hopefully I will have that up today.

    If you can ping your gateway, the network card in set up properly.
    check the file /etc/resolv.conf for a valid name server.
    I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.

    Thanks again for everyones help. I am now posting this through linux. I chose to install a distro of red hat fedora. I was having the same problems with it at first but after looking up some info and finding the right drivers for my nic that is built in to the mobo I am able to get online with it. So now I am going to poke around with this distro and see what i can learn from it and then move on.

    ok so now I have another slack question. I am in need of installing the hardware for my wifi card. I have got slack installed and running on an old laptop and I want to get my wifi card working. Are there any tutorials on installing hardware?
