Do you live in a fascist state?

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

    1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

    2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

    3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

    4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

    5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

    6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

    7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

    8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

    9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

    10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

    11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

    12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

    13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

    14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Yeah, every night when I come home from second shift at
the death camp, I'm like totally disgusted. It's hard to get
the blood out of my work shirts.
I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.

Many of those could be applied to any country faces with defeating a "fascist state". For instance the allied powers once united to attack Hitler and free his grasp on continental Europe. Those fascist even put airplane silhouettes for every fascist Nazi they shot down.

When I came to work this morning I passed a couple of riots where teachers were being hanged, showed my papers at the tank roadblock, saw 100,000 American flags, passed the work camp where are the poor are starving, saw a cross hanging on a government building, passed the gate of the political dissidence building where they are being tortured, and wondered why we haven't had an election for decades while entering the gates of my government dominate corporation and grabbed some girls ass and called her sweet buns in sexist disdain.

Actually I saw not a single flag but passed the Camp Casey local encampment, as I ALWAYS do. The streets were clean, the poor are fed, and if I did "grab ass" at work I would be in JAIL, through the real fascist laws in this country. Along with those who have the will to actually smoke a cigarette in a public place outside or inside.

    Road:

Be nice to the kids.... They don't get it yet.... Don't suddenly shock them with the realities of life.... It's like waking a sleepwalker - you just shouldn't do it because you don't know how you will affect them...

I'm still laughing at RC's message though.... So perfectly put....

The Parallels are interesting though, eh!

    1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism – Singing the US National Anthem at every sporting event , even chess games and checkers…

    2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights – The US allows it’s security forces to detain and interrogate and torture suspects on foreign soil.

    3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause – US President Bush declares 4 countries as the Axis of Evil (Afghanistan/Iraq/Iran,North Korea)

    4. Supremacy of the Military - The $439.3 billion US defense budget for fiscal 2007 is 4.8% more than the current budget and includes $84.2 billion in weapons purchases, up 8% from the 2006 request.

    5. Rampant Sexism -.-In a recent pole taken by the "New York Times" 62% of working women interviewed agreed with this statement "Most men are willing to let women get ahead, but only if women do all the housework at home first."

    6. Controlled Mass Media - In short, the major media are corporations "selling" privileged audiences to other businesses.... Media concentration is high, and increasing. Furthermore, those who occupy managerial positions in the media...belong to the same privileged elites, and might be expected to share the perceptions, aspirations, and attitudes of their associates, reflecting their own class interests as well. Journalists entering the system are unlikely to make their way unless they conform to these ideological pressures, generally by internalizing the values.... Those who fail to conform will be weeded out.

    7. Obsession with National Security - On November 4 of this year Republican legislators proposed a plan to build a wall between the border of U.S. and Mexico called "True Enforcement and Border Security Act" which was approved on December 16. This new plan also calls for thousands of new security border officers, immigration investigators, immigration judges, and attorneys. Mexican president Vicente Fox, vows to block the plan by seeking international support to stop the U.S. from building the wall. There is also a plan to build a wall between the Canadian and U.S. border which is being considered by the U.S. House of Representatives.

    8. Religion and Government are Intertwined -
God would tell me, ‘George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq.”
    - George W. Bush, 2003

    9. Corporate Power is Protected http://oldamericancentury.org/9_corp.htm

    10. Labor Power is Suppressedhttp://www.shastalink.k12.ca.us/csea...shAttacks.html

    11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts – What can I say about that?? Bush got voted in and Arnold and Jesse and Sonny and …

    12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment – FBI’s Most Wanted TV, or COPS, or watching OJ being driven down a stupid road, being followed by what 20 cruisers, and that shrew on CNN, man she just loves to bash men…

    13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption – Okay, just about everyone in Congress could be put here.(same with our Parliament)

    14. Fraudulent Elections – Can you say “Hanging Chads”, Florida, hhmmm Governor related to President, I smell a rat..

But you know, just about every country on this planet could fit these descriptions....
