    Hey Hey,

    Eg
No Offense intended Eg... but that's the worst example I've ever heard... There's such a thing as 'caught in the act' that immediately implies guilt... and it's as good as proven at that point.. since eye witness accounts are almost guarenteed convictions... At very least the person is guilty of possession of stolen property even if they didn't steal it.. Eitherway that example requires a crime be commited... This is a quest for information... at least until otherwise is proven.

Innocent until proven guilty is great... but It's how you come across proving something... In society we've chosen guilty until proven innocent in most major criminal cases in the past while... in most cases in general. However just because the media puts that twist on things, doesn't mean we have to conform.. isn't the background of IT Security, of "Hacking" if you will, anti-conformity... To assume someone has malicious intent is a bad way of looking at it.. Take a look at the Full Disclosure mailing list... or half the other ones... they respond to everything.. they have large readership and they're popular and lively... If we responded the same way that they do.. perhaps we'd have a popular and lively site...

Do you really think that the money supporting this site would be pulled out if the "dark side" of computer security was broached from time to time? I highly doubt it... I've seen IT companies advertising on porn sites.. Those people that believe actually talking about security will hurt this site are people that have no knowledge and are here as a place to "chill" anyways...

I'd love to see some darker, more evil stuff covered...I also think it would attract readership...

I fall back on this a lot.. but a full article on the escape sequence in hayes compatible modems would be malicious... but full of useful information to those tryign to learn and also somewhat outdated so it'd be insignificant.. With the number of large sites posting exploit code, and methods of attach... this site posting that information isn't suddenly going to come under the wrath of the outside world... That's just people that are full of themselves talking..

The site rejuvination.. ther's no doubt about it... but it needs everyone to stop whining at the same time. This thread started off as a valid question.. now it's more people bitching about what's wrong... and what should happen.. no logical debate, no valid reasoning... nothing.. just bitching and moaning..

Here's my take.. with an example question..

"Man those dicks at school are so mean, we have to use a special login to access the internet and I want the password... someone tell me how I can get the password"
-- Don't answer it... they implied their own violation of the rules and law..

"So how would you bypass or gain access to a computer"
-- Answer... they could be learning at home and you couldn't be dismissing someone who could viably contribute to the community...

Two other things need to happen..
    1. Stop promoting the site as a tech support site... that's killing it.. and dragging in a bunch of useless members that no one really wants anyways..
    2. Stop saying google it.. and I'm just as guilty of this... sometimes people are demanding and idiots.. they deserve it.. but when they ask a valid question.. and you say google it... all you're saying is that you yourself have no idea of the answer to the question..

Anyways.. everyone stop your damn bitching about the site.... it's getting annoying.

    Peace,
    HT

    Hi HT,

You're right...bad example...OK...he wasn't standing next to the TV ( he couldv'e been waiting for a bus and the TV dropped beside him tp throw the police off the trail ) ...but...anyways instead we'll say he looked similiar to the description of the subject and was wearing the same color shirt.

And sure, this site wouldn't be adversely affected in the long run by the loss of an advertiser they'd simply pick up another one with fewer ethical requirements...ones that don't care about their public perception.

As for griping about the site...I haven't read that anywhere...the question was where else do you hang out...and this has been brought up before periodically.

Im not some kid who calls himself a hacker. I've never met anyone who has done something illegal call themself that. I don't go around forums asking how to h4x0r but its fair to say that people who do are harmless... and generally anyone who dubs themself a hacker is an idiot. I don't see the point in getting that emotional over boxes with a few buttons and blinking lights anyway.

If it makes you feel any better... I'll be perfectly honest and assure you that I have every intention to cause trouble online.

This is a site I use to swear by to get me out of trouble, they are very conservative in there, but it is a good one.

    Hi Spec,

Do me a favor and one day explain to me why a guy who has the brains to do something positive with his talents, chooses to waste them in an attempt to cause mischief for no apparent reason.

Because I really don't get the point to this. You occasionally make a good intelligent post that shows you're not as stupid as most people think you are...and then you waste it by making 20 lame-a@@ posts that you know are just going to get you into trouble.

It's almost like you're scared to let it go...do everyone a favor...

    just let it go!

Tiger_Shark: You may have been around longer than I have, im not about to argue or debate whether that fact is true or false, as its quite irrelevant. I know 17 year old kids as you put it, who could run around some professionally trained individuals who have been around for years. quality, not quantity dude. Now you seem to have something very confused. I have not at any point said i dont like this place? at worst i dont like the attitude some of its members seem to hold. in particular, yours. I dont intend to leave because of one or two little egotistical ****wits (you wanted to get personal). You say im not worth your time? then why are you wasting it responding. you seem to think that its gonna have some sort of effect? you are responding, so you do care somewhat.

Nokia: okay heh, no idea. if you had said typed period i would have understood, we dont say it, but i knew an englishman who would say that.

Eg: I wouldnt call the cops. 2 months or so ago i had an item valued at about 2000$ stolen from me. I made 1 phone call to set up a meeting with someone. an hour later i had that meeting. less 4 hours later that item was returned to its location. far more efficient than dealing with cops

HTRegz: you seem like a cool guy hope that is the more accepted opinion here.

    Hi,

As far as other sites go, like JonnyFrond, i also use http://www.tek-tips.com.

Although the members are usually very good at answering whatever question you have i tend to find it a lot harder to navigate around than AO, and because the number of different forums is just so vast, i have no personal connections there like i do on AO.

However that also means that you will very rarely if at all see arguments over there like you see here at AO.

For me i like the personal connections i have made here at AO and i have learnt an awefull lot about security here, however if i have any question that is not security related i tend to ask it over at Tek Tips.
