    alfacleaner

After polishing off a litre of Chardonnay, my wife and I got a hankering for online porn. Stupid me, a programmer should have known better. Got this nasty thing called alpha cleaner, ruined the mood and took a long time to clean up--yes I chose my computer's well being over immediate gratification. I won't live this down for a long time. Good thing we are together 12 years and I don't make enough money for her to sneak off and hire a good lawyer.

All kidding aside, she knows 'm a geek and feels comforted by that, players for her are a turn off--who can deny my good fortune. Let me get back on topic, I followed the instructions at:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtopic=43477

I seem to be cleaned up. THis alfa was real pain, anybody else experience this? Am I really ok?

This seems to be a fraudulent company that installs spyware on your computer in order to get you to buy their product. WTF, call me naive, but how do they get away with this?

Have a good laugh at my expense, but two hours pouring over the registry is no laughing matter. Just remember, if your wife wants porn use PPV--you will save yourself allot of grief:-)

Look Nihil, my fun filled friend, I think what he is really after is some better porn sites.

    That is by the by

I am a huge fan of this sard0nicpan, the hosts file as it stops you getting to all the likely spy and malware infested sites.

porn does have it's place and surfing porn is dangerous for your computer....use a bootable CD next time!

lol good to know u got urself out of the woods...
AlfaCleaner is a rogue, its mostly closely tied to PSGuard desktop hijacker. PSGuard downloads and installs AlfaCleaner and re-installs it if u uninstall. the downloader is hard to notice coz its a single DLL hooked to IE.

At some point, AlfaCleaner even detected its own silent setup file as a threat, just so it can show u that it works. However, it will never detect the PSGuard downloader.

Atleast its not as bad as SpyAxe i think, SpyAxe along with SpySheriff was widely distributed by downloaders.

Then you were lucky. There's a movie clip site (Juliamovies.com). It has loads of free clips arranged by alphabetical order. NEVER GO THERE! It's also loaded with viruses and trojans (because they probably don't monitor or police their links). This is where I encountered Alfacleaner.

It loaded up on my computer in less than 15 seconds and automatically began running a scan. This happened even though I had MacAfee Virus protection and Stopzilla.

Numerous warning messages from the two programs came up, and i selected "delete files" and "block the application" but Alfacleaner loaded up anyway, even installed it's own desktop icon.

I halted the progress of the scan by ending the task with the Windows task manager. Then I scanned my computer with MacAfee. Even tho the MacAfee is updated daily it didn't know that my computer had been infected with this program and the virus software that Alfacleaner loads into your system to make you buy the Alfacleaner product.

    LUCKILY tho, I also had Stopzilla. Stopzilla indicated I had been infected with [glowpurple]Alfacleaner[/glowpurple] , [gloworange]smitfraud[/gloworange] , [glowpurple]unknown origin 2.6.06[/glowpurple] , and [gloworange]desktop hijacker[/gloworange] .

It not only quarantined the trojans, virus, and rogue programs, it removed all of, apparently without a trace.

So YES, you can get infected from "free" porn. And no, a single virus scanning program alone won't catch everything. Get yourself some kind of antispyware program too.
